Journalists standing up for communities — an urgent conversation at Social Good Summit 2025

When communities are under siege and human rights are being violated, what is the role of the journalist?

This urgent conversation takes the spotlight at Social Good Summit 2025 during a panel discussion with journalists and journalism champions.

For this panel, entitled “Keeping Journalism Alive for Communities and Change,” we’ll hear from the following critical voices:

  • Nataliya Gumenyuk, Ukrainian war reporter and co-founder of Public Interest Journalism Lab
  • Patricia Evangelista, Filipino trauma journalist and award-winning author of Some People Need Killing
  • Priscilla Enriquez, president and chief executive officer of James B. McClatchy Foundation
  • Inday Espina-Varona, Filipino investigative journalist and expert on citizen engagement

The panel will be moderated by Rappler head of community Pia Ranada.

Our four panelists know what it’s like to be a journalist in a time when communities are targeted and oppressed.

Nataliya has been covering Russia’s war against Ukraine, and through the Public Interest Journalism Lab and The Reckoning Project, has actively worked with Ukrainian communities and lawyers to document human rights violations by the Russian military in a manner that can be used in international court, for accountability.

Patricia covered former Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte’s bloody campaign against illegal drugs, which included extrajudicial killings of alleged drug addicts and dealers. She told the story of drug war victims, their families, and even the paid assassins themselves to show how one man’s “war” was waged against a nation’s people, and its systems of due process.

Priscilla helms a foundation that has supported local newsrooms in the United States during the era of Donald Trump, a president who has threatened journalists, and cut funding from public journalism. Trump’s policies have thrown communities in turmoil and given rise to polarization and sharply divisive politics. At no time has local journalism been more necessary.

Inday, an investigative journalist hailing from Bacolod City, has had decades of experience reporting on red-tagged communities, and warlordism and patronage politics in different parts of the Philippines. At Rappler, she had headed the regional reporting team, giving a platform for issues beyond the country’s capital that deserve news coverage and attention. Her work leading ABS-CBN’s participatory journalism initiative Bayan Mo iPatrol Mo gave her unique insight into citizen engagement in the Philippines’ colorful and complicated political and media landscape.

As moderator, Ranada will weave these perspectives together and bring her own experience leading Rappler’s community growth and engagement efforts, and her time as a political reporter during the Duterte administration.

Catch this timely conversation by attending Social Good Summit: Make Your Move on November 16, from 1 pm to 8 pm at Lanson Place MOA, Pasay City. You can get tickets here. For queries, and assistance on purchasing tickets, email socialgood@rappler.com.

A related breakout session at Social Good Summit will tackle how citizens can keep their advocacies and movements alive. Participants will hear from movement founders about how they keep their organizations sustainable, all while achieving impact and milestones in their advocacy work. The discussion will be moderated by Rappler civic engagement head Samantha Bagayas.

Do you know of flood control projects in your area? Share them with Rappler!

Hi daily!

Do flood control projects in your area help your community, or do they cause more harm than good?

Rappler is taking a closer look at how these government-funded projects are affecting Filipinos on the ground.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. called out corrupt officials and contractors accused of pocketing public funds meant for flood-control infrastructure in his fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA).

The message was strong — but a clear, long-term roadmap for flood control was missing.

We don't have to wait for the weeks, months, or years this investigation will take. Many of us live with these flood control projects. We pass by the construction sites. We endure the floods that happen despite these projects.

Be the eyes and ears in holding corrupt contractors and officials accountable by sharing these details in the FloodControlPH chat room on the Rappler app:

  • Location of the flood control project
  • Your firsthand experience — be as detailed and specific as possible
  • Relevant photos with date, time, exact location, and description

To join the FloodControlPH, download the Rappler app for FREE via Apple Store and Play Store and head to the chat room:

The chat room is where you can report flood control projects you spotted in your community, and receive updates about our flood control reporting project.

We also encourage you to stay in the chat room so we can tag you for follow-up questions!

If enough people report, we would be able to give a comprehensive citizens' account of the flood control projects that could supplement or challenge whatever the government comes up with. This helps us keep the government accountable and on its toes.

See you there!

Hi daily,

Rappler will be covering and monitoring President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA) this July 28!

Ahead of the SONA, we've worked with partners to help make sense of how the President has fared midway through his presidency in addressing top issues of Filipinos. Together, we've produced videos, community chats, and stories.

You can also flag inaccurate claims, promises unfulfilled, or context on various issues mentioned during the SONA. Your insights can help inform our coverage, as well as help our fact-checkers know if there's anything that needs to be verified from the President's speech.

Hi daily!

Sara Duterte's impeachment trial has seen delays and efforts to dismiss it. With the 20th Congress set to start on the day of SONA, why is it important for Filipinos to monitor this test of accountability?

Nicolene Arcaina of Ateneo Human Rights Center, and Atty. Josiah Quising of Project Gunita. This community chat will be moderated by Rappler senior desk editor Mia Gonzalez.

This community chat aims to unpack why accountability and transparency matter, especially when so much is at stake.

Your voice matters in this conversation! Join us later, and share your thoughts about the impeachment! You can also ask questions or just follow the discussion.

Show us how the weather is affecting your community

Dear daily,

In the past few days, several parts of the country have been battered by heavy rainfall due to the enhanced southwest monsoon or habagat.

On top of the habagat, there are now two tropical cyclones inside the Philippine Area of Responsibility – tropical depression Emong, and tropical storm Dante. Both are enhancing the habagat, the main source of rain for several days now.

Rappler has been sharing updates in the Project Agos chat room, but we need your help so people have more eyes on what's going on in other parts of the Philippines.

With your contribution, more people are updated as to how the weather is affecting different parts of the Philippines. This could help inform locals, disaster responders, officials, and organizations aiming to provide relief to affected areas. More than that, you help give a visual to the data and news reports that are being put out.

We're using the Rappler app to offer you, a valued member of our community, a space to shape our coverage, and be a part of conversations on pressing issues. Downloading the Rappler app is FREE, and available on both iOS and Android.

Here are some ways you can help out during this time:

  • Stay updated and informed by joining the Project Agos - HabagatPH chat room in the Rappler app. In the chat room, you get alerts, advisories, and other updates about the weather, as well as see reports from concerned citizens about how different parts of the country are faring.

  • Share photos and updates to the Project Agos - HabagatPH chat room. Is there flooding in your area? Is your electricity out? Are there interesting incidents that you are seeing in your area because of the weather? You can share the situation and a photo to the chat room so more people are aware about what's going on in your area. If you spot any on social media, we highly advise verifying these first before sharing to the chat room.
  • Found a relief initiative for those affected? Share them with us! If you spotted a relief initiative to help those affected, feel free to send the link and details to the volunteer opportunities chat room in the Rappler app. We will then collate these in a page for easy reference!

We hope you stay safe and dry during this rainy season!

See you in the chat rooms!

Courage on,
