Importance is created when we invest emotionally in something.
That something can be an idea, a concept, a system of beliefs. As long as it is charged by emotions, it will have importance. The more we invest, the more important something becomes. It does not matter if you have invested emotionally in creating a home out of a house or turning your hobby into a business, or buying a diamond. It is all the same at the level of how it feels to you in terms of importance.
The importance is the actual energy inside the emotions. The more important something is to you, the more intense the emotions that accompany every thought regarding the investment. This importance can be exhausting and is often unnecessary.
When something is important (you studied really hard and long to pass the exam for instance) we attach too deep regarding a certain outcome. If it does not go as planned, we feel bad. And this can influence other important things in our life.
When something is "unimportant", does not mean you are indifferent. It simply means that you are, beforehand, at peace with any outcome. You studied and you are in peace with the outcome of "passed", same as you are in peace with the outcome of "failed". If you have passed: good for you. If not, make sure that you have plan "B". Actually, sometimes it helps to have plan "A" in case plan "B" does not go as you wish.
Sounds easy on paper. It is not effortless. It needs practice. The main obstacle in this practice ( and I speak from my own experience) is our own idea of self-worth. But this is another post.
