The first Spark Day carol by Quilliam Horace Flint (lyrics) & Larry Moser (music), composed on the occasion of the eighth annual Spark Day: May 16th, 2017.
Fourteen years ago Wetzel County Animal Shelter rescued an old dog from the brink of death whose spark had almost gone out.....almost. With love and care he was recalled to life, his dying embers relit and the Spark of Life renewed.
Given the name Sparky at the shelter, he inspired fans up and down the east coast. After several months at WCAS, he was adopted and his fans followed him into his home, getting frequent updates via "Spark Notes" from his person.
Sparky was happy. He lived nine months in a home -- but he did not make it to his one year anniversary. Nevertheless, as what would have been Sparky's one year anniversary neared, we all decided it was better to celebrate the day for the goodness that was Sparky than to mourn it for what Sparky did not get to have.
So every May 16th since then we celebrate SPARK DAY, to mark the Spark of Life in its many forms and celebrate it doing life-affirming things. You can sing along to this, the offical Spark Day carol, and on May 16th toast with us at 7 pm EST. Here's to keeping the sparks lit in those in need, in each other, and ourselves!
LYRICS
Spoken:
Some years ago, down on his luck,
Little old Sparky showed serious pluck.
His flame, had dimmed
And his fate, looked grim.
But...
LEADER: Let's lift our voices and give a big cheer!
CHORUS: Spark Day is here!
Toast what we hold dear!
A heart that was open to see turned the key,
Unlocking the hidden beauty,
And kindness reclaimed him back from the brink;
It gives us pause and makes us think...
LEADER: Let's lift our voices and give a big cheer!
CHORUS: Spark Day is here!
Toast what we hold dear!
A seed was planted from that lasting spark,
Fiery flowers have banished the dark.
Now many people far and wide
Have nurtured the flames and turned the tide.
LEADER: Let's lift our voices and give a big cheer!
CHORUS: Spark Day is here!
Toast what we hold dear!
Don't we all know how far caring can go
To lift up the sad ones and bring back their glow.
Look for the spark, though obscured it may be
From delicate roots may grow a strong tree.
LEADER: Let's lift our voices and give a big cheer!
CHORUS: Spark Day is here!
Toast what we hold dear!
Ask what to do now to add more to life,
Don't dwell on the petty or cultivate strife.
If each of us does even one kindly thing,
There'll be plenty more reason to rise up and sing!
LEADER: Let's lift our voices and give a big cheer!
CHORUS: Spark Day is here!
Toast what we hold dear!
