CELEBRITY WORLD PH
By Crispina M. Belen
Where are they now?
Former Filipina professional singer Teresa Amor is now based in Reno, Nevada!
I was surprised but very happy when I received a Facebook message from former singer Teresa Amor asking if I still remember her. With her message she enclosed a clipping of my first write-up about her published in Manila Bulletin.
Teresa said "Tita, I found this among my files and I took it as a sign to make kumusta to you!" That short write-up was written sometime in 1976. In it, I wrote that after her singing stint in the country, she went to the United States where she worked and studied in LA. She said her father was Chief of Immigration then but was offered a consultancy position in DC. Being the youngest of the children, he brought Theresa with him. The rest of the brood followed later.
On her earlier stay in the US, Jun Politico invited Theresa to sing with him at the Kono Hawaii Club where the Society of Seven was performing. She was also invited to a taping of a Donny & Marie Osmond show by the popular stars themselves, in gratitude for a VIP welcome accorded to them when they visited the Philippines.
Now 67 years old (she celebrated her birthday last July 4, a momentous date in the US being their Independence Day), Theresa lives with her family in Reno, which is in Northern Nevada. Married to Steve Allan Canaday (from Gallipolis, Ohio) for 41 years now, they have two children and three grandchildren. Teresa and Steve celebrated their wedding anniversary, coinciding with Steve's birthday last June 6.
In 2005, Teresa brought her family to the Philippines for a visit (her next visit was in 2012). "I visited with my ninang Gloria Romero, my kinakapatid Boots Anson-Roa and Kuya Germs Moreno," she recalled. Her children, Omar and Lucille, who can be compared with The Carpenters as they both sing and compose their own songs, guested on "Walang Tulugan." Omar, who is a doctor/internist, plays the piano.
Admirably, Omar and Lucille used their talents for charitable projects, raising funds for victims of tragedies like the 911.
A cancer survivor, Teresa said among the Filipino journalists she admired are the late Joe Quirino and Mario Cabling, Julie Yap Daza, and me (thanks Teresa).
And thank you most especially for reconnecting with me after all those years.
