Today's reading: Hebrews 5:12-14
Seek the solid food
We read in Hebrews 5:12-14:
12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food. 13 For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. 14 But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
All of us started out as babes in Christ. We knew little of God, but God has called us to know Him more and even better. At some point, it is understandable that we act like babies. We are still spiritually immature. We can easily be tossed to and fro because we haven't established a good foundation.
As we start walking down the path of righteousness, we are fed with milk. We are given spiritual food that is easier to chew and understand.
However, there's no excuse for a person who remained a babe. The Almighty expects all of us to become spiritually mature. A growing human being can't live on milk alone. By the fifth or sixth month of existence, parents need to introduce soft food until that person grows up and becomes big enough to handle solid food.
Can you imagine a physically mature man who still drinks milk and doesn't eat solid food? That person would surely get weak and die due to malnutrition.
The same is true with us, followers of the Messiah. Milk is good, but we have to grow and move to meatier food. This means that we must grow in the knowledge and grace of our Savior, Yahshua.
It is such a tragedy for a person to grow in the church, but never in Christ. We might be in the church for months and years, and yet, we don't see any spiritual growth in our lives. Our knowledge of the Bible is essentially the same as when we first set foot in the Body of Christ.
One of our main goals should be to move from the milk to the meat. By doing so, we become spiritually mature and we can better serve God and His people.
