Blizzard announced that Overwatch 2 will be getting a One Punch Man animé collaboration this coming March. The event, which runs from March 7 to April 6, will see Doomfist dressing up as Saitama from the show.
"Together we've created a collection of cosmetics from the beloved anime, including Saitama skin for Doomfist," stated Blizzard in a recent blog post. "We'll reveal each item before they drop on March 7, with one being a Legendary skin that's earnable via themed challenges.
While the Overwatch 2 One Punch Man collab is the first outright crossover between Blizzard's marquee hero shooter and an animated show, the series itself is no stranger to animé references. Among these are a Neon Genesis Evangelion spray for Moira, the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure-esque ultimate of Sombra and a Dragon Ball Z spray for Baptiste. In addition to these, Doomfist also has a spray spoofing Saitama's punch. (Read: 5 Top anime adaptations of video games)
Beyond the Saitama skin, the collab will also feature a host of other cosmetic items from the show. The log post states that the studio will be revealing additional items leading up to the collabs release on March 7.
While this new collab is a first for Overwatch 2, it likely won't be the last. Last summer, Blizzard's Jon Spector, VP of Overwatch, stated that the studio was interested in exploring crossovers in the same way Epic Games has done with Fortnite.
"We've seen some really fun examples out there of games working with other brands or other games," said Spector. "I'm a big anime nerd myself. I think it's super cool when I see Naruto appear in Fortnite. I don't even play Fortnite, but that's awesome."
"And as we look at the Overwatch 2 space, those are things that we're interested in exploring. If and when we do that, one of our key values is to do it in a way that feels like a great fit for the Overwatch franchise."
Of course, the One Punch Man cosmetics aren't the only things coming to Overwatch 2 as part of its third season—which starts on tomorrow, February 8. The game will also be getting a myriad of new cosmetics with based on Asian mythology. Among these is an Amaterasu Kiriko Mythic skin that the studio states is "inspired by various deities in Japanese mythology with customizations you can mix and match themed for the moon, the sea, and storms."
