Let's talk about being Black during work, shall we? This is an essay and my experience and I'm sharing it with you.
First, why is being Black an issue at work? There was an actual issue with theft, and the response was to watch and report my activity and even inform the actual thief (who is white) to watch and report me for theft. The thief learned to steal when our shifts overlapped. When he was uncovered, the first thing the staff did was try to protect him and his position.
Privilege is one hell of a drug. You don't have to take the time to fact find when you can scapegoat a person based on race. You don't want the other people, who are liked, to be considered suspects. You don't think I belong in this sea of white privileges. From this staff's actions and perspectives, only Black people steal. These are people who went out of the way to discover a way that I pulled off this theft, when the stolen items are always under security cameras.
No one in authority wanted to check the cameras any other times but when I arrived and departed. This is an actual embarrassment and miscarriage of common sense. These are white people who tell me, by their actions, that being right in racism, racist, complicit in racism is far more important than resolving the actual crime. The hubris is staggering.
Imagine walking into a building and each day people tried to document your every move so they can weaponize the law against you. Nobody had my back. They are all corrupt. That is pure hated. This is just one incident. There is much, much more.
I have to affirm myself daily to keep myself grounded. Yeah, I keep my cool, and place focus on my duties. Gotta love yourself more than people can hate you. It ain't easy, so I keep working at it. Never give up on yourself.
Happy creative endeavors.
