Nintendo announced that the Super Nintendo classic Super Mario RPG would be getting a remake for the Switch. The remake of the beloved collaboration between Nintendo and Squaresoft headlined Nintendo's latest direct, showing what Switch players can expect following the recent release of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
Rumors that Nintendo would be remaking Super Mario RPG started swirling days before the presentation, thanks to Twitter user Pyoro_ND's tweets about "a remake of a SNES classic." Prior to this, they had accurately predicted the release of Everybody 1-2 Switch and Sonic Superstars.
Released in 1996, the original Super Mario RPG saw Nintendo collaborating with Final Fantasy developer Squaresoft (now Square Enix) to create a role-playing experience featuring characters from the beloved Super Mario Bros. franchise.
The trailer itself starts with images showing the classic game in full pixel art as it appeared back in the 1990s before transitioning into full 3D.
The Super Mario RPG remake launches on Nintendo Switch this November.
The announcement was the biggest news to come out of the recent Nintendo Direct—one many were looking forward to as Nintendo had just released Tears of the Kingdom and had, until the remake's reveal, no big title on the dock for this fall. Of course, the Super Mario RPG remake wasn't the only thing Nintendo announced at the presentation. Other announcements include a new Detective Pikachu game, which arrives on October 6, 2023; new DLC for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet; a new Splatfest for Splatoon 3, coming in July; a remaster of the 3DS title Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon; and a new game starring Princess Peach.
Meanwhile, third-party titles announced at the show include Persona 5 Tactica, a turn-based strategy spinoff of Persona 5; the Saturday morning cartoon-styled Mythforce; and Batman: Arkham Trilogy.
