School of Musical Traditions | 7112 Willow Ave., Takoma Park, MD 20912 | signup at 6.30pm, music at 7pm
Sponsored in conjunction with Institute of Musical Traditions, this is a small LISTENING ROOM open mic. The evening is free, but every night we have a featured artist and we hope that you can support them by tipping or purchasing merch!
TONIGHT w featured artist Ruth Wyand AND Mark "Muleman" Massey!
This is going to be an absurdly overpowered night - in the best way possible. I've been looking forward to having Ruth in the room for MONTHS, with her unique sense of humour and awesome guitar licks - and then last week Mark Massey mention he was going to be in Maryland... and you just can't have such spectacular performers in town and NOT try to gather them in one place.
Being diversified is Ruth Wyand's specialty. Demonstrating guitar virtuosity with powerful fingerpicking, bottleneck slide and a warm alto voice Ruth plays a mix of Americana, jazz, blues, folk, country with a portion of Piedmont picking and bluegrass clawhammer thrown in. Her songwriting is universal, using a melting pot of styles with lyrics that are timeless, relatable, emotionally resonant, sometimes witty, sometimes serious but always human and genuine.
Mark "Mule Man" Massey grew up in the cradle of the Delta blues, Clarksdale, Mississippi, Mark Massey heard plenty of blues, but it took a stretch in Parchman Prison for Mark to discover the blues' deeper meaning. It was there he met and befriended David Kimbrough, son of legendary Mississippi blues icon, Junior Kimbrough, who taught him the basics of the blues and got him a spot in the Parchman Prison Band.

*Additionally, come prepared to PLAY that music. Please be prepared to output to either a quarter inch or XLR cable. No, you may not send me the track.
