Spooky season is here, but many of the biggest video games releasing this month don't actually fall under the horror genre.

Instead, a wide range of games are launching this October for PC gamers and console players alike. From Ubisoft and Marvel franchises to colorful Nintendo titles, there's something for everyone releasing next month. Here are the highlights.

Assassin's Creed Mirage

Craving more Assassin's Creed? You're in luck. Ubisoft is releasing Assassin's Creed Mirage this month on October 5, making it the 13th core game in its longstanding historical action-adventure game series.

The story of Mirage takes place in Baghdad in the year 861 CE, in what is now known as Iraq. Players will fight enemies and work their way through the main storyline as Basim Ibn Ishaq, who first appeared in Ubisoft's previous Assassin's Creed Valhalla game. Mirage's protagonist is considered faster than previous assassins in the series, and prefers to move stealthily rather than fight out in the open.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2

Insomniac Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment are launching Marvel's Spider-Man 2 on October 20, exclusively for PlayStation 5. It's possible that the game might eventually be released for Windows PC users eventually, like its predecessors Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 gameplay trailer picks up with a symbiote-empowered Spider-Man as he fights enemies with his black tendrils, giving off Venom vibes as the alien aggression takes over in combat. Players can switch between Peter Parker and Miles Morales, who's come into his own as the iconic webbed superhero.

Alan Wake 2

If you're in the mood for something scary this October, Alan Wake 2 fits the bill. This action-adventure game releasing on October 27 is a sequel to the 2010 original, which was remastered and re-released in 2021.

Alan Wake 2 follows the story of the namesake protagonist, a writer who seems to have forgotten about a book he wrote. As the mysterious story unfolds, Alan Wake 2 promises players a mix of psychological horror, doppelgängers, and narrative-driven action.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder

For younger gamers and those looking for a respite from the Halloween tradition of spooky games and scary movies, Nintendo is releasing the cheerful platformer Super Mario Bros. Wonder on October 20 exclusively for Switch consoles.

In Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Mario and his friends must fight Bowser in an effort to save the Flower Kingdom. Players take on the role of Mario and will have to jump, run, collect coins, and avoid enemies to navigate through seven different regions' worth of obstacle courses in the game.

Sonic Superstars

Sega is also releasing a colorful platformer game next month with Sonic Superstars, which launches on October 17 on Windows PCs, Xbox consoles, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation consoles.

Gamers will be able to speed through obstacle courses as the namesake blue hedgehog—or enjoy the game with friends in multiplayer mode. This Sonic game pairs the throwback 2D style of gameplay with lavish modern visuals, delivering a hybrid experience that's sure to hook fans all over again.

Forza Motorsport

Love car racing games? Forza Motorsport is releasing this month on October 10 for current-gen Xbox consoles and Windows PCs. The game will offer players a multiplayer mode as well as over 500 different cars to choose from, as well as a variety of real-world racetracks replicated into the game.

On Xbox Series X and S consoles, Forza Motorsport will support ray tracing and HDR as well as 4K Ultra HD resolution. It'll also be available as a part of Microsoft's Xbox and PC Game Pass subscription service.

The Fabled

Looking for a Dark Souls-like role-playing game? The Fabled is a free-to-play fantasy RPG that offers optional NFTs and is releasing this October on PC, according to the game's Steam page.

The Fabled's alpha demo earlier this year showcased a third-person POV as players can hack, slash, and fight their way through an endless blue fog and streams of possessed skeletons and other demonic enemies.

So whether you're looking for a dose of crypto-powered medieval fantasy horror or a brightly-colored platformer, there are plenty of games releasing for whichever platform you prefer to game on.
