A Connecticut resident lost over $3 million to a scam involving Kraken, a cryptocurrency exchange. The scam involved con artists posing as representatives of Kraken, who transferred the funds into unaddressed cryptocurrency wallets. The victim's account was frozen, and the criminals were found in Pakistan. Despite receiving $3.2 million back, police claimed they couldn't make any arrests. The crypto industry is under scrutiny for its stance on avoiding connection to dishonest characters, especially as Kraken expands its product offerings in the UK and US.
The crypto business is under scrutiny from regulators as online fraud is on the rise. An exchange wishes to avoid having dishonest individuals use its name to commit financial crimes. But in one of the most costly frauds this year, that is exactly what took place. Due to con artists posing as representatives of Kraken, a Connecticut individual lost more than $3 million.
A Westport resident who wishes to remain anonymous reportedly followed suggestions to move money out of a retirement account, according to a report by the Connecticut station of NBC News. also to reinvest the funds in a presumably Kraken-related account.
According to the victim, more than $3 million was immediately transferred into cryptocurrency wallets that the victim could not access. Local detectives tracked the transactions and frozen the accounts that were involved in the scam in cooperation with the state's Organised Crime Task Force.
Their inquiry revealed Pakistan as the location of the criminals. Despite receiving $3.2 million back, police claimed they were unable to make any arrests in the case. In addition to the devastation done to the victim financially and emotionally, this scam could not have happened at a worse time for Kraken.
The exchange does not require the stigma of any connection to dishonest characters, not even a fictitious one. Particularly not now that it intends to broaden its product offers in the UK and the US.
