Assistant to the Villain by Hannah Nicole Maehrer
I didn't really know what to expect from this story. I gather that this appeared on Tik Tok before being novelized. I have never gone anywhere near Tik Tok, nor wanted to, so who knows?
It is clear from the very beginning that this is not a deep philosophical work. : - ) We're talking something like 'office rom com' set in fantasy cosplay. Not necessarily my cup of brew, but I'll bite.
And, I'm glad to say, it's pretty good. Silly. But good. I see why it was a popular online serial.
Evie lucks into a job as the PA for "The Villain", which turns out to be a dream job. Evie makes friends for the first time in her life, and turns out to be a pretty kick ass PA. OK, the company is literally in the Evil Business, but how does that differ from every other company? Unlike most office jobs, stuff happens. A lot of stuff happens all the time. (You can tell this was originally delivered in a serial format.)
The big news, though, is that the boss turns out to be a dream boat, and Evie falls hard for him—and that ain't good. Naturally, Evie and The Villain drift towards one another. In the best Rom Com traditions, the love action is mainly a lot of flirty banter, with considerable slapstick comedy, to boot.
We're all rooting for Evie and friends, though the story is far from over by the end of this volume.
Stay tuned.
