Review
When it comes to gaming sometimes it's good to step away from the modern cinematic adventures we are treated to in the current gen and revisit the gaming of yesteryear in a retro styled title. Treachery in Beatdown City feels like it's a game ripped out of the systems of my childhood with it's pixelated look and action packed gameplay.

In the perfectly retro storyline you are tasked to save the President from the evil terrorist organisation threatening to take over. The evil Ninja Terrorist organisation have kidnapped president Blake Orama and it's down to three elite fighters Lisa Santiago, Bruce Maxwell and Brad Steele to set about the rescue mission and break the president free, over the top? Yes, full on action? Yes, tongue firmly in cheek? Also yes. The game doesn't follow the usual side scrolling formula that you would've seen in countless other games from the retro era (seemed to be the in thing to do - much like battle royale now) the Devs have mixed in a kind of RPG/strategy mechanic when it comes to the combat where you choose your move then unleash in but you need to be sure it's the most impactful attack to use or you need to rely on your defense to see you through.

The move away from the stereotypical button mashing arcade fighter that you normally get with this style of game, I'm not knocking it though as this is probably my favourite genre of games, it's quite nice to see the mechanics changed slightly and makes you actually think about your moves and attacks rather than just smashing away at the buttons with the hope of actually performing that amazing combo.

For me one of the best parts of this game is the story that flows throughout, a nice bit of action comedy with an 80s action film feel to it ( my favourite time for action films ) the story has a distinct tongue in cheek comedy style that will give a few laughs along the way to give a good balance to the overall game, the game takes on a different gear as you start unlocking moves for your character and you begin to take control of the streets. It's hard for me to describe what genre I would put the game into, strategy/fighter would probably be the label if I needed to put one on, as a whole I feel I found the game enjoyable and enjoyed the nostalgic feel that the game gives you, it's not a game that will blow you away but you will still have alot of fun playing it.
Graphics and Sound
In terms of graphics the Devs have gone full retro with the styling bringing the pixelated graphics to the forefront which in my eyes work well with what the game is trying to do. The cutscenes which are a series of cartoon style stills really added to the early 90s style which in turn carries the retro feel. The character models were pretty well put together and everything has a bold and bright colourful vibe to it. The game levels are detailed and give an vibe similar to that of the early 90s consoles.
The early 90s theme runs with the soundtrack too bringing the music back from soundtracks gone by. Unfortunately there are no voice acting to go with but the subtitled cutscenes still made me laugh on occasions.
Summary
Time now then to put my thoughts into a summary, overall the game is a good blast of retro, the strategy style of gameplay I found difficult to get my head around and didn't really work for me at first but after a while I did get into it. If you liked the story heavy side scrolling beat em ups of the late 80s early 90s then you'll be on the right track with this game.
Verdict-Out of 5

GOOD
I give Treachery in Beatdown City: Ultra Remix a good score of 3
a good retro flashback with lots of action, the combat mechanics take a little getting used to but worth taking the time to get familiar with them. Recommend for a bit of a retro fix.
