Winter's Gifts by Ben Aaronovitch
Hooray! Another story from Aaronovitch, this one concerning "the waters of Wisconsin". The frozen waters of Wisconsin.
We met FBI agent Kimberly Reynolds in an earlier story; she has returned home to DC. A call from rural Wisconsin requires "assessment", so Reynolds is off to the woods—in January.
Unfortunately, this isn't a false alarm, there is definitely a problem. Scotland Yard would call it "a Falcon affair". The FBI calls it "Unusual Circumstances" or something. By any name, it's bad news.
Agent Reynolds encounters baffling weather, even more baffling monstrous wildlife, and a variety of suspicious characters. Who or what smashed up the town, and what happened to the missing people? Whoever it is, what do they want?
The trail eventually leads to a nineteenth century clash between the US government and local tribes, which apparently involved serious magic. This may or may not be related to a resurgence of nature spirits (possibly driven by climate change), that has many practitioners worried. Very worried.
As in the case of the Folly, there's no substitute for a copper on the case and on the scene. Kimberley may well need to shout "FBI! Don't move!" in her best, calm, "I am a G-man" voice. That should do the trick! : - )
