Xiaomi's First-Ever Electric Vehicle Aims to Compete Against Tesla and Porsche!

There is no POCO version either, and don't bother looking for global ROMs too.

Xiaomi is a company that possibly manufactures every type of appliance you can think of, not just smartphones. Need a rice cooker? Xiaomi has it! What's that? The heat is killing you? Xiaomi got you covered. Need to brush your teeth? Just choose between regular and electric. They almost have it all (even toys)!

One of the company's biggest ambitions is to become a top vehicle manufacturer. That dream finally becomes a reality today as, after a long series of teasers and research, and about USD 10 billion in investments, Xiaomi unveiled the SU7 in collaboration with BAIC Motors. The new vehicle is intended to compete against the Tesla Model S and the Porsche Taycan Turbo.

Speaking of competitors, the SU7 Max, theoretically, outperforms both the Taycan Turbo S and the Tesla Model S in its 0-100km/h clock speed, with the SU7 clocking in at 2.78 seconds. This is partially due CATL's 800V battery which offers a 220km range in just a 5 minute charge. In smartphone terms, that's like a 100W charger charging a phone from empty to full in just 15 minutes!

Meanwhile, the SU7 is powered by the BYD Blade LFP (Lithium-Iron-Phosphate) battery which is a tad weaker but is intended to be more casual user-friendly.

In its benchmark tests, the Tesla maxes out at 250km/h and takes 3 seconds to reach 100km/h.

It was unveiled in China last month and it's now ready for pre-orders. In terms of its design, its headlights greatly resemble (or probably even purchased from) the ones the McLaren 720S had. The overall body ironically resembles that of its competitors, with its shape resembling the Taycan.

The car comes in three colours, and as a smartphone manufacturer, they are named as if the car was a phone. These include Aqua Blue, Mineral Grey, and Verdant Green. This full-sized vehicle was designed by Li Tianyuan who also was a former designer for BMW, which explains its European-like styling.

And speaking of naming cars as if they are phones, there is also a more powerful variant, the SU7 Max. The main difference is that the SU7 Max can top out at 265km/h and comes with an active rear spoiler. Another major difference is that the SU7 Max is All Wheel Drive, making it more suitable for off-road driving, whereas the SU7 is rear wheel drive.

Xiaomi's investment and research isn't just about the design, it's also about the power. The company has self-developed an engine called Xiaomi HyperEngine. It comes in either a V6 or V8 configuration. The V6 is now in mass production while the V8 would take another year, in 2025.

The wheels are manufactured using an aluminum alloy and its tires are sourced from Michelin. The vehicle integrates HyperOS, a major overhaul of MIUI intended to serve Xiaomi's ecosystem better. The SU7 is the main reason why the company went as so far modify and change MIUI. HyperOS is also coming globally, including to select POCO phones. Don't bother looking for a global ROM here.

The car's infotainment system is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295 (yes there is still a Qualcomm chip in it, so its smartphone roots never disappeared) and boots in under 2 seconds. The passenger seats also have a large 16.1" 3K screen which you can use to control the car's seats, appliances, and of course, access your favourite media. Moreover, certain Xiaomi tablets and phones will also be able to access some of the car's features.

The car does not offer 5G connectivity, nor a fingerprint reader. Its windshield is not made of Corning Gorilla Glass either. Although the company did not announce an IP rating, it should survive the rain and the SU7 Max is most likely dust protected. The vehicle's infotainment system has Bluetooth and Wi-Fi thankfully.

The SU7, which will not come neither in POCO nor Redmi brandings, will be released in 2024 and Xiaomi is still yet to decide on the pricing. If we were to guess however, the SU7 Max will be priced (in Philippine Pesos) around PHP 2-2.5 million while the SU7 Max at PHP 3 million.
