Incidentally, I was talking with the TaoLing (about Variant ideas and expansions) and I mentioned Cosmic Encounter as the first game (that I know of) where adding a few characters could produce an awesome expansion, and now that I think about it, that was one of the first "Rules aren't too complex, but every character has this one modifier" games, too.
