What I read in 2023

Not to be outdone by Barack, here is what I read in 2023. Hope you find a gem or two in there for your reading lists.

Happy new year! 🤓

Non-fiction

English

  1. Sandworm: a new era of cyberwar, by Andy Greenberg
    • A good overview of the most advanced cyberweapons made by nation states over the last decade, a fascinating and under-discussed world. My notes
  2. When the Heavens went on Sale, by Ashlee Vance.
    • Well-written overview of the space industry and private players. On reflection it felt a bit too anecdotal - a few companies are profiled but there isn't a broader outlook on the industry (maybe kept for a future book). My notes
  3. 🏆 Chip War, by Chris Miller
    • Clear and gripping overview of the semiconductor industry and its geopolitical implications. I felt this was just the right level of detail for me and gave me the context to decipher this topic in the news. My notes
  4. Elon Musk, by Walter Isaacsson
    • Love him or hate him there is a lot to learn and be entertained by with Elon, and the level of access Isaacsson got made this a great read. I just hoped he'd challenged him a bit more.
  5. The Coming Wave, by Mustafa Suleyman.
    • A good high-level overview of the wave of technologies coming online — AI, synthetic biology, quantum — and their promise and perils, their centralising and decentralising force, and the questions they pose for Humanity. My notes
  6. Based on a True Story, by Norm Macdonald
    • Norm's my favourite comedian and I miss him dearly. I read this in his voice the whole way with a huge grin on my face.

Francais

Fiction

English

  1. 🏆 Dalva, by Jim Harrison
    • Deservedly a classic. Superb writing and it really transported me to the great outdoors of Nebraska, Montana, New Mexico before and during my trip there! This review is excellent

Francais
