Those buying physical copies of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth for PlayStation 5 in Asia may be hit with a nasty surprise. Square Enix confirmed that the discs for the two-disc game have shipped with incorrect labeling, causing the labels for the discs to be swapped by mistake.
As previously reported, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth comes in two discs – a "Data Disc" for installing the game, and a "Play Disc" for actually playing it. However, it seems that Asian copies if Final Fantasy VII Rebirth have incorrect labeling causing the printed labels on the discs to be swapped.
"Due to an error during Sony Interactive Entertainment's manufacturing process, the two discs that comprise the physical version of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth have been printed with the incorrect labels," reads the statement from the company.
Square Enix goes on to clarify that the Final Fantasy VII Rebirth disc's incorrect labeling will not prevent players from playing the game.
To play the game, players will simply have to swap the discs around, using the black "Play Disc" to install the game and the white "Data Disc" to play it, instead of vice versa. Following installation, players will only ever have to insert the latter to play Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
As for whether or not Square Enix and Sony will print a fixed batch of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth discs, no word has been given out by either company as of yet.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is the sequel to 2020's much anticipated Final Fantasy VII Remake and represents the second part of a trilogy revisiting the events of the original Final Fantasy VII, adding new context and, at times, new story beats to the 1997 classic. Details on the third game in the trilogy, however, have yet to be revealed.
In the meantime, players can enjoy Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, incorrect labeling and all, on PlayStation 5, with a PC release sometime in the future.
