Amid all the hubbub surrounding the reveal of Assassin's Creed Shadows, Ubisoft dropped an important details about the game – for the first time in the decade, an Assassin's Creed game will skip PS4 and Xbox One.
That a current-generation game is skipping out the two previous-generation consoles shouldn't be news. However, Ubisoft has consistently continued to release Assassin's Creed games on last-gen hardware, right up until 2023's Assassin's Creed Mirage.
This was most likely to continue to sell the games to players who've yet to purchase current-gen hardware – more than a few recent current-gen-only sequels, such as Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, have notably sold less than their cross-generation predecessors.
The move seems to hint that Ubisoft is confident that Assassin's Creed Shadows will be able to reach its sales targets despite not being on PS4 and Xbox One. Sony reported that its PlayStation 5 – the current leader in the console market – has sold over 59 million units since launch, after all. In addition, Assassin's Creed Shadows is also arriving on PC, which is not the case with something like Final Fantasy VII Rebirth which remains a PS5 exclusive. This should help cover any losses from skipping PS4 and Xbox One.
Whether or not the decision will ultimately have a negative affect on Assassin's Creed Shadows sales figures, we'll likely find out when the game launches on PlayStation 5, PC and Xbox Series consoles on November 15, 2024.
