Overview
Every family has a secret.
The mega-rich Pallanders are used to luxury – a castle in the Scottish Highlands, a villa in Tuscany, a billion-dollar fortune and an island in the Caribbean – but their perfect life is about to be shattered.
Every father has a favourite.
Sebastian Pallander dies, leaving a pitiful amount of money to his wife and children. His family fight over the scraps as old rivalries and bitter jealousies come to the surface. And when Pallander's son is killed in mysterious circumstances, everyone suspects foul play.
Every killer has a motive.
After a desperate race for survival, the relatives gather at their estate to weather the storm. They all begin to wonder: who will be next? Where has all their money gone? And will any of them get what they truly deserve?
Overview taken from the official book press release.
Review
This is my first taste of Denzil Meyrick's work and as far as first impressions go then this is an impressive start, the story starts off reasonably tame but then develops it's many different twists as the book moves further in.
From the inset you think that the story will be a calm dividing of the Pallander estate but then quite quickly you realise that this is no ordinary will reading with the family receiving alot less than they originally thought the cracks in the family fabric are beginning to show.
The charm of the rural Scottish setting gives an overall warmth to the book as the story opens up a Pandora's Box of skeletons and hidden family secrets that begin to come to the forefront. The more they begin to dig the murkier the situation becomes, how deep routed the Pallander name is or was in society is beginning to come to light and not necessarily for the right reasons.
As the investigation continues news of other mysterious incidents happening to family members begins to filter through and the realisation that this may well not be a normal family environment begins to come through.
Yes I was expecting an Agathy Christie style murder mystery however the murky adventure I was taken on was alot more my thing and I thoroughly enjoyed turning the pages in anticipation for the next twist. The Estate is a fresh take on the crime / thriller drama it has intrigue and conspiracy by the bucket load as the Pallander family implodes proving once and for all money is indeed the route of all evil.
Summary
Time now then to put my thoughts into a summary, overall I had a great experience throughout the book seeing the mighty Pallander family fall apart falling from the golden tower. The intriguing twists and turns keep coming keeping you second guessing each theory you might have been thinking of. A great read caught me a little off guard but completely in a good way.
Verdict-Out of 5 ⭐
⭐⭐⭐⭐
GOOD
I give The Estate a good score of 4 ⭐ a great read that wasn't entirely what I expected but at the same time I was pleasantly surprised. The story has many dark twists and turns and runs with the right amount of fluidity. Definitely a recommendation from me.
