So, you've got a gunslinging, justice-serving, son of a nice lady to join you on the Astral Express. If you're not exactly sure what to do with the muddle-fudger, then this Honkai Star Rail Boothill guide will give you everything you need to know about the space cowboy.
Boothill is Honkai Star Rail's featured 5-star unit for the second half of patch 2.2. As a member of the Galaxy Rangers, Boothill follows the path of the Hunt, making him an expert at dealing single-target damage.
The Galaxy Ranger's weapon of choice may be a six-shooter, but Boothill may as well be chucking nukes at enemies with the damage he's able to pump out. He isn't your typical DPS that just spams his Skill and Ultimate though, so let's go ahead and get into the details of his kit. (Read: Honkai Star Rail Robin – Abilities, Relics, and Light Cones)
Boothill Abilities
Here's a closer look at Boothill's kit so you can squeeze out every point of damage from the Galaxy Ranger:
- Skullcrush Spurs (Basic Attack) – Deal Physical damage to target enemy and recover one Skill Point.
- Fanning the Hammer (Enhanced Basic Attack) – Deal heavy Physical damage to a single target. This does not generate Skill Points.
- Sizzlin' Tango (Skill) – Boothill and target enemy enter a Standoff state. While in this state, Boothill's Enhanced Basic Attack is activated. Both the enemy and Boothill are taunted and receive additional damage when in Standoff. Boothill gains one stack of Pocket Trickshot whenever an enemy in Standoff is defeated or has its weakness broken.
- Dust Devil's Sunset Rodea (Ultimate) – Apply Physical Weakness to an enemy while dealing damage and delaying the target's turn.
- Five Peas in a Pod (Talent) – Every stack of Pocket Trickshot will increase the Toughness Reduction of Boothill's Enhanced Basic Attack. The Enhanced Basic Attack will also deal additional Break Damage to enemies who already have their weakness broken.
- 3-9x Smile (Technique) – The first use of Boothill's Skill will apply Physical Weakness to the target for two turns.
Boothill Traces
By upgrading Boothill's Traces, he'll gain some significant boosts to his Ultimate uptime, survivability, and overall damage output. Trace materials for the space cowboy can be farmed from the SoulGlad Scorchsand Audition Venue in Penacony.
- Ghost Load (Ascension 2) – Increase Boothill's Crit Rate and Crit Damage by an amount based on his Break Effect stat.
- Above Snakes (Ascension 4) – Reduce the damage received by Boothill from enemies that are not in the Standoff state.
- Point Blank (Ascension 6) – Boothill gains 10 Energy whenever he gains a stack of Pocket Trickshot. This effect will still trigger if Pocket Trickshot is at the maximum number of stacks.
Upgrading Boothill's minor Traces will enhance his HP, Attack, and Break Effect stats.

Best Light Cones for Boothill
It may seem like Boothill doesn't have too many options for Light Cones due to his kit revolving around Break Effect, but there are still a few that he can make use of. Consider these Light Cones when building the foul-mouthed Galaxy Ranger.
Sailing Towards a Second Life
As Boothill's signature Light Cone, Sailing Towards a Second Life has everything the Physical Hunt character needs. It provides a massive buff to the wearer's Break Effect stat and ignores a portion of the target's Defense when dealing Break Damage.
On top of that, the user will also gain a Speed increase if their Break Effect reaches at least 150% in battle. This is excellent for reaching Speed thresholds and lapping targets while in Standoff.
Cruising in the Stellar Sea
A 5-star Light Cone that is free-to-play friendly since you can purchase it from the Herta shop in Simulated Universe. It provides a Crit Rate buff and gives the wearer a significant Attack boost whenever they defeat an enemy.
This Light Cone is easily upgraded to Superimposition 5 and can serve as a solid stat stick.
Subscribe for More!
Subscribe for More is one of the simpler Light Cones in Honkai Star Rail. Just slap it on, and the wearer will deal more damage with their Skill and Basic Attack.
While Boothill's Skill doesn't deal damage, this buff is also applied to his Enhanced Basic Attack. This effect is doubled when the wearer is at maximum Energy.
River Flows in Spring
This Light Cone will give a boost to the wearer's Speed and Damage, but it comes with a bit of a caveat. These buffs will wear off when the user gets hit, which is something that is bound to happen with Boothill since entering the Standoff state will taunt enemies.
So to make this Light Cone work for the space cowboy, you'll need to place him on a team with someone who can provide big shields like Gepard or Aventurine.
Adversarial
3-star Light Cones rarely ever get a chance to shine but Adversarial has earned a spot on this list. It gives the wearer increased Speed for two turns after they defeat an enemy.
Given Boothill's high damage output, he can easily dispose of smaller targets to gain that Speed boost in one shot.
Swordplay
Swordplay gives a sizeable Damage buff to the user whenever they attack an enemy. This effect stacks up to five times and triggers with each hit of an attack.
Since Boothill's Enhanced Basic Attack hits six times, he'll gain the full effect of this buff whenever he's in the Standoff state.
Best Relics for Boothill
You'll have a few options when picking out relics for Boothill but a few sets do stand out for the Galaxy Ranger. Consider these relic sets when gearing up the Physical Hunt unit.
4-pc Thief of Shooting Meteor
Boothill wants a ton of Break Effect and that's exactly what the Thief of Shooting Meteor set provides. The two-piece effect grants a 16% Break Effect bonus and the four-piece effect allows the wearer to generate Energy after breaking an enemy on top of an additional 16% Break Effect.
If you've got solid substats for a complete Thief of Shooting Meteor set, you should definitely throw it on Boothill as it is currently his best option right now.
2-pc Thief of Shooting Meteor, 2-pc Watchmaker, Master of Dream Machinations
Mixing in two pieces of the Watchmaker set together with Shooting Meteor has pretty much the same effect as wearing the complete Thief of Shooting Meteor package. You'll still get a total of 32% Break Effect, the only difference is you won't get the free Energy when breaking targets.
Choose to mix and match relic pieces from these two sets if it gives you some good substats, otherwise stick with the full Shooting Meteor set.
2-pc Thief of Shooting Meteor, 2-pc Messenger Traversing Hackerspace
Aside from wanting a ton of Break Effect in his build, Boothill is also going to benefit from having high Speed. The two-piece effects from these sets will provide the Galaxy Ranger with a decent mix of both.
If you can't find a decent pair of Shooting Meteor pieces to use, using a couple of Watchmaker relics will achieve the same effect. The Speed bonus from the Hackerspace relics will be a huge help in reaching thresholds and triggering bonus effects from Planar sets.
4-pc Champion of Streetwise Boxing
With a full Streetwise Boxing set, Boothill will have his Physical damage boosted and gain a bonus to his Attack every time he gets hit or launches an attack of his own. This could be an amazing relic set for the space cowboy as long as you can get some good Break Effect rolls for substats.
The best part about this set is that it's obtained from the same cavern as the Shooting Meteor set so you'll be extremely efficient with your energy while farming it.
2-pc Talia: Kingdom of Banditry
Boothill doesn't have much of an option when it comes to Planar sets since there's only one that boosts Break Effect. With the Talia set, the wearer will gain an unconditional 16% Break Effect Increase.
If the user's Speed reaches at least 145 in battle, they'll get an additional 20% Break Effect bonus. You're going to want some Speed built into your Boothill anyway, so try to aim for that 145 threshold.
Here's what you should try to get in terms of relic main stats and substats:
- Body: Crit Rate or Crit Damage
- Feet: Speed
- Rope: Break Effect
- Orb: Physical Damage
- Substats: Break Effect, Speed, general survivability stats
Boothill Eidolons
You can get through Honkai Star Rail content a lot quicker by unlocking character Eidolons, you'll need to either be extremely lucky or spend a good bit of money. While some Eidolons have the potential to be downright game-breaking, you should be able to clear content just fine without them.
Here's a look at Boothill's Eidolons to help you decide if he's worth trying your luck on:
- Dusty Trail's Line Star (E1) – Start battles with one stack of Pocket Trickshot. Boothill's attacks will also ignore 16% of his target's Defense.
- Milestonemonger (E2) – Gaining Pocket Trickshot while in Standoff will recover 1 Skill Point and increase Break Effect by 30%. This effect can be triggered while Boothill has the maximum number of Pocket Trickshot stacks but cannot be triggered more than once per turn.
- Marble Orchard's Guard (E3) – Raise Boothill's Ultimate level by 2 and Basic Attack level by 1.
- Cold Cuts Chef (E4) – Boothill deals more damage to enemies in Standoff while he receives less.
- Stump Speech (E5) – Raise Boothill's Skill and Talent levels by 2.
- Crowbar Hotel's Raccoon (E6) – Boothill's Talent will deal additional Break Damage to targets and adjacent enemies.
Best Boothill Teammates and Synergies
While Honkai Star Rail has introduced characters whose kits revolve around Break Effect before, they are still quite rare in the game. To get the most out of Boothill, try to team him up with the following characters.

Harmony Trailblazer
Honkai Star Rail's main character has the unique ability to switch between different Paths, changing up his role on the battlefield. When set on the Path of Harmony, the Trailblazer will give players access to a new mechanic called Super Break.
Super Break deals additional damage to broken enemies based on a character's Break Effect stat. Since Boothill should be built with as much Break Effect as possible, the Galaxy Ranger can deal some heavy damage with Super Break.
Ruan Mei
Everything in Ruan Mei's kit will benefit Boothill's playstyle, making her one of his best teammates in the game. She can provide a Speed buff, increase Break Efficiency, extend Break duration, and a couple of ways to boost the party's damage output.
Ruan Mei is extremely easy to use as well, so simply putting her on a team will do wonders for your offense.
Gallagher
While Boothill can work with pretty much any sustain unit in the game, Gallagher stands out because he can help with the team's damage output. Like Boothill, Gallagher is built around Break Effect so slotting him in as your healer on a party that already has Harmony Trailblazer and Ruan Mei will basically have you double-dipping into their buffs.
Gallagher may need a bit more attention to use since he is a 4-star unit, but he is definitely capable of keeping the party alive as long as you're familiar with his abilities.
Bronya
Though she's been around since launch, Bronya has been able to stay relevant due to her game-breaking mechanics. By using Bronya's Skill, she can buff a character's damage and advance their action forward, allowing them to act immediately.
This is huge for when you want Boothill to take an extra turn to finish off an enemy in Standoff before they get a chance to act again. Bronya can get Skill Point hungry though, so be mindful of your resources when she's on the team.
Asta
If you don't have any of the 5-star support units above, Asta can be a decent substitute until you unlock the Harmony Trailblazer. She can raise the party's Attack stat with her Skill and provide a massive Speed buff with her Ultimate.
Asta is also pretty good at breaking enemy Toughness as long as they are weak to Fire.
That'll do it for our Honkai Star Rail Boothill guide. Enjoy building the muddle-fudging Galaxy Ranger and have a forkin' good time dealing massive single-target damage with him.
