In a surprise move many thought would never happen, Marvel and Capcom are teaming up once again to bring the latter's classic arcade fighting games to modern hardware. Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics will arrive on Nintendo Switch, Steam and even PlayStation 4 sometime later this year.
Comic book company and game publisher Capcom used to be inseparable in the eyes of fighting game fans for decades. The latter's X-Men and Marvel-themed fighting game from the mid-nineties eventually led to the much-loved Marvel vs. Capcom tag-team crossover fighting games.
However, things took a turn for the worse with 2017's Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite. The latter's seemingly rushed state plus lack of iconic X-Men characters — this was prior to 20th Century Fox, which still had the X-Men film rights, being bought by Marvel parent company Disney — caused that game to flop.
MvC: Infinite's failure, plus rumors of disagreements between both companies, led many fans to believe that both companies would never work together again.
However, the announcement of the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection shows otherwise.
Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection will feature seven classic arcade titles from the late 90s and early 2000s. This includes the seminal one-on-one fighters, X-Men: Children of the Atom and Marvel Super Heroes, as well as the earlier crossovers X-Men vs. Street Fighter and Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter. Of course, the collection will also feature the first two Marvel vs. Capcom titles, the last ones in the series to be released in arcades.
In addition, the collection will also come with Capcom's 1993 Punisher side-scrolling beat 'em up.
As for what other features the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection will come with, the collection will feature galleries for concept art, arcade cabinet marquee art, music, and even development documents. More importantly, the game's will feature online play using rollback netcode for smooth connections. (Read: How to optimize Tekken 8's online multiplayer with one setting)
Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection is currently set to arrive on Nintendo Switch, Steam and PlayStation 4 later this year. As for whether this means a fourth Marvel vs. Capcom game could be in the works, only time will tell.
