Have you ever felt like your happiness hinges on achieving certain conditions? Maybe it's the belief that you can't be happy unless your health improves, your finances are stable, or your relationships flourish. I know I've fallen into that trap before, believing that my happiness was tied to everything falling perfectly into place.
In essence, this is the lie we say to ourselves that leads to depression:
"I can't be happy unless..."
This statement can assume different forms depending on the circumstances of people. It can be like any of the following:
- I can't be happy unless my health improves.
- I can't be happy unless I'm wealthy.
- I can't be happy unless I get a better job.
- I can't be happy unless I find someone to love.
- I can't be happy unless I achieve my life goals.
Have you ever told yourself any of these lies? What's amazing is that you don't even know these are lies and you would believe it so easily.
But here's the truth I discovered: happiness isn't about having perfect circumstances, but rather it's choosing to be happy in spite of the imperfect circumstances.
For years, a lot of people struggled with depression, believing that their happiness depended on external factors aligning just right. They would constantly chase after better health, financial stability, and fulfilling relationships, thinking they were the keys to my happiness. But the more you chased, the more elusive happiness became.
It wasn't until I let go of this lie—this idea that my happiness was conditional—that things started to change. I began to understand that true happiness comes from my relationship with God and His Son Jesus (Yahshua).
In Hebrews 13:5, it says, "...Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you." Knowing that God is always with me, regardless of my circumstances, brought a deep sense of peace and security.
Yahshua Himself reassured us in John 14:27 and John 16:33, saying, "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you... Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid... In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."
These words remind me that the peace and happiness God offers are unlike anything the world can give. It's a peace that transcends circumstances, a happiness rooted in knowing that no matter what challenges I face, God's Son has already overcome them.
So, if you're feeling trapped by the lie that your happiness depends on external conditions, I encourage you to pause and reflect on your relationship with Yahweh the Most High, our Heavenly Father.
Embrace His promise of never-ending presence and peace. Shift your focus from chasing after perfect circumstances to nurturing a deeper connection with the One who offers true and lasting happiness.
Let's break free from the lie together and discover the joy that comes from resting in God's unfailing love and grace.
