Overview
Set in London in 1968, A CURTAIN TWITCHER'S BOOK OF MURDER follows
the lives of the inhabitants of a suburban London street. But this is no ordinary road.
"Ask anyone on Atbara Avenue how well they know their neighbours, and they'll
answer 'well'. After all, they see each other across the vast distance afforded by close
proximity, and that is probably for the best...".
For the best, because Atbara Avenue is a street where, all too often, murder feels like the solution.
With a delicious cast of characters, dazzling plotting, and an utterly unique voice, Gay Marris' first book is remarkably accomplished. If you've been longing for a fresh and compelling new voice in the world of crime fiction, your wait is
over.

Review
If we are all honest we are all prone to a bit of curtain twitching it's something that I think is in human nature, the urge to just be nosey. A Curtain Twitcher's Guide to Murder is selection of stories about the goings on in upmarket Atbara Avenue where at first glance everything looks very "middle class Britain" but behind those curtains dark secrets lurk.
Admittedly this book wouldn't have been one that I would've normally picked up but I am glad I did, it's a different pace in terms of storyline but still has alot of meat on the bones and that's thanks to the variety of cast members within the book varying from the quiet and retiring type of neighbour that you would hardly hear from right to the outwardly outrageous, just goes to show that you just can't judge a book by it's glamorous cover.
I liked the setting of the book set in the swinging sixties which so happens to be my favourite era (fashion, music) the whole collection of mini stories are put together like bricks in a wall as they come together to create a full bodied story that has the elements of murder mystery but also has the light hearted comedy albeit in the darker sense.
The almost realistic vibe of the book made the story more relatable and made me invested pretty much from the beginning and I will definitely look at my neighbours in a different light now I mean you just never know do you?
Summary
Time now then to put my thoughts into a summary, overall I enjoyed the book it had a laid back vibe but engaging and full entertaining. Gay Marris has a natural style to her writing that puts the reader at ease but the realistic feel really makes the book more relatable and that bit more enjoyable. I would recommend this book if you are looking for a bit of a gear change, perfect for those summer park reads.

Note on the author
Dr. Gay Marris is a retired research scientist. Her career focused on insect
ecology, parasites and honey bee health. A Curtain Twitcher's Book of Murder is
her first novel, set in the suburbs of the deceptively dangerous suburbs of
1960s London, where she grew up. Gay now lives in York with her husband, a
cat and a tortoise.
