Review
I went into this book with an open mind having had family members who had partners in the forces I thought that I'd already made my mind up that they "chose" that life, but how wrong could I possibly be as Jen McDonald puts together a collection of personal accounts including her own that will open your eyes and your heart as you are taken on a journey into a different world. The various accounts within the book pulled at my heart strings and made me think myself lucky and be thankful for what I have and not take for granted the simplest of things that I would just expect to be there, even down to the feeling of comfort and security in your surroundings.
Although the book is a collection of personal journals or accounts it reads in a natural way where you almost have a feeling that you are sat round a table with a brew and biscuits (I'm British it always involves a brew) and having a casual chat with new found friends. These women have been open and honest but also at the same time empowering and inspirational with some of the lessons within the book can easily be used in everyday life, it certainly has made me change my attitude.
This was an introduction for me to Jen McDonald as a writer but hopefully it won't be the last, I enjoyed the style that she writes in an almost relaxed style mixing a honest rawness with light hearted comedic style this book will have you laughing but at the same time it will also leave you deep in thought, it's definitely opened my eyes.
Summary
Time now then to put my thoughts into a summary, overall I enjoyed the book it gave me moments of thought provoking but also moments that made me smile. There are lessons that I have taken from this that I will take forward into my personal life, from the stance of "they knew what they were getting into" I have changed my opinion to one that gives these spouses the credit they deserve all super heroes each and every one of them. I'd definitely recommend this book.
