Overview
Lyla Santiago has spent months working on a research project that could be the key to getting a permanent job in her field.
So, she can't really drop everything to go to a desert island with her actor boyfriend Nico to film One Perfect Couple, a new reality TV show that Nico is sure will lead to his big break – can she?
Two weeks later, Lyla finds herself boarding a boat to an isolated luxury resort in the Indian Ocean.
The rules of the game are simple. Ten strangers have to survive together on the island - and the last couple standing scoops the prize.
There will be sun, sea, laughs and plenty of flirting.
What could possibly go wrong?
But when a huge tropical storm cuts them off from everything, the group must band together.
As tensions run high and fresh water runs low, Lyla realises that someone is playing this game for real – and they'll stop at nothing to win.
Ten might have arrived, but who will survive to the end?
Review
Unless you've been living under a rock for a number of years you'll no doubt know of a certain well known TV show, Love Island. Now imagine if you mixed that with another TV show Survivor but added a little extra spice to it, a literal fight to the death, One Perfect Couple pieces together the best bits from the shows we know and brings the darkness that we know and love with thrillers.
The book follows two main characters Nico and Lyla. Lyla is a successful researcher who has been tirelessly working on an important project that could be the key for her career, Nico is an aspiring actor that is struggling to get that break he needs but is still hopeful that this break is out there he just needs to find it. After a conversation with his agent this "break" could just be about to happen thanks to a golden opportunity in the shape of brand the new reality show One Perfect Couple.
Nico is full of new found positivity and is like a child at Christmas but he would need to convince Lyla to drop everything and go on this journey with him that will give him the opportunity to realise his dreams but it will mean putting the handbrake on Lyla's. Having convinced Lyla to go with him Nico and Lyla embark on a journey that could change their lives, but it may not be in the way they want.
All looks to be going swimmingly as the couples socialise with each other on a luxury island in the Indian Ocean (sounds like heaven) but a violent storm cuts them off from the rest of the world and this is where the book takes a darker turn as the couples must survive but the stakes have risen and the actions of others raise Lyla's suspicions that some are not playing fairly and love isn't the only thing that is being played for.
This was an introduction for me to Ruth Ware as an author and I was very impressed with her style, the book started off with a gentle pace as it built up the foundations for the story and as the book progressed the tension and intensity ramped up, I like thrillers and can now say that I like Ruth as an author too.
Summary
Time now then to put my thoughts into a summary, overall I really enjoyed the book I felt the pace of the story worked well and Ruth did a great job of building the characters and this allowed the story to flourish. The overall story had tension throughout and a pace that will keep you glued to the book - I would much prefer to watch Ruth's version of the reality show. Also on a side note the cover artwork is absolutely stunning.
