Overview
Barry White, an idle forty-something man-child, lives with his Ma and spends his days drinking, gambling and watching videos of his favourite gorilla Chico on YouTube.
He does all this whilst lying in bed pretending to work – for a logistics company which sent him home during the pandemic but has never asked him to come back. They're no longer sure what he does for them and neither is he.
When Barry's luck changes and a crazy drunken bet on the horses lands him £1 million he finally has a chance to strike out on his own and grab the new life that he has always dreamt of.
But is he ready to take the plunge? And does he even want to?
Whilst he dithers, there's a more pressing problem to address... what to do with a shedload of cash that no one – not even his own Ma – knows he has got!

Review
Sometimes it's good to just kick back and read something more light hearted, something that makes you smile and laugh and Absurd Life of Barry White is definitely that book.
The book is based on the bumbling life of Barry White Jnr who is trying to find his feet in the rat race we call life, working in a dead end job working from home well if you can call lying in bed and watching videos on YouTube working but when you're working mainly from home I suppose you can get away with it.
Barry's father, Barry Snr, is the legend of a local rugby team so going into his father's footsteps seems the logical thing to do but the thing is Barry Jnr isn't built in the same mould as Barry Snr and rugby just isn't his thing, more the lying in bed gambling is more his thing, well something is on the horizon that will likely change the path that Barry Jnr will take and his life may well change but only time will tell if it will be for the better or the worst.
I feel that the character Barry Jnr will appeal to most readers and definitely those males that are around the middle age point in life (like myself) I found alot of what Barry does will mirror real life I certainly found a few points in this book relatable and more funny because of this but it also provoked a few thoughts as Barry tries to build his life, the book is definitely has a feel good vibe with a positive direction.
I enjoyed the style that Rob Harris writes with I found the book flowed naturally and the realism and authenticity made the book more relatable and allowed me to enjoy the story more, you can't help but route for Barry to succeed, I would definitely like to see this on the screen one day it definitely has that potential.
