Capcom just announced its latest fighting game compilation, and it's a big one. Capcom Fighting Collection 2 brings back a host of classic Capcom fighters from the late 1990s and early 2000s, including crossover classic Capcom vs SNK 2 and ex-Star Wars fighter Plasma Sword.
The turn of the millennium was a productive time for Capcom's fighting game development teams. The company was firing on all cylinders, experimenting with multiple new IPs — including those using then-new 3D graphics — as well as working on a major crossover with cross-town rival SNK.
Sadly, most of these titles did not make the original Capcom Fighting Collection in 2022. That game focused mostly on 2D fighters on Capcom's own arcade hardware. Capcom Fighting Collection 2 rectifies that, with the 2025 title touching on many games on later 3D hardware from Sony (Capcom's PlayStation-based ZN-1) and Sega (the Dreamcast and Naomi).
The games included in Capcom Fighting Collection 2 are:
- Capcom vs SNK Pro
- Capcom vs SNK 2
- Project Justice
- Capcom Fighting Evolution
- Street Fighter Alpha 3 UPPER
- Plasma Sword
- Power Stone
- Power Stone 2
For many, the Capcom vs SNK titles will be the headline games of Capcom Fighting Collection 2, what with SNK back in the spotlight with its recent resurgence and willingness to once again work with Capcom.
That said, the rest of the games are interesting in their own right. For example, Street Fighter Alpha 3 UPPER is an updated version of SF Alpha 3 with new balance changes and more characters that was never released outside the arcade. Meanwhile, Plasma Sword is the second game in the Star Gladiator series. This originally started as an honest-to-goodness Star Wars fighting game before LucasArts pulled the plug and Capcom decided to release it as its own.
Meanwhile the Power Stone games are not traditional fighting games at all, instead being arena brawlers with items similar to the Super Smash Bros. games.
As with Capcom's other compilations, including the also-in-development Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection, Capcom Fighting Collection 2 will feature the now standard set of goodies, including concept art, music, graphical filters and more. In addition, they'll also feature online play with rollback netcode.
Sadly, those looking forward to this will need to wait as Capcom Fighting Collection 2 is currently scheduled for a 2025 release on PlayStation 4, PC and Nintendo Switch.
