Hoyoverse just announced that Honkai: Star Rail will be collaborating with Type-Moon and Kinoku Nasu's Fate/stay night.
Released in 2004, Fate/stay night is a visual novel that tells the story of the Holy Grail War, a secret tournament where combatants fight for to get their wishes granted the eponymous Holy Grail. Here, combatants fight with both their own magecraft as well as summoned heroes from history as Servants.
From its initial visual novel, the IP has since grown into the larger Fate franchise, comprising various video games, light novels and animated productions.
The collaboration with Honkai: Star Rail looks to be focused on one of the more popular animé series: Fate/stay night Unlimited Blade Works.
Unlimited Blade Works focuses on the story route of the same name from the visual novel. Specifically, the teaser below hints at Archer, the Servant of the mage Rin Tohsaka, appearing in the game.
How Archer plays into Honkai: Star Rail's larger plot, and whether other Fate/stay night characters will also be appearing is currently unknown. Also unknown is whether Hoyoverse will continue supporting Archer after the collaboration ends.
Hoyoverse is no stranger to character collaborations in its game, with Aloy from Sony's Horizon series appearing in Genshin Impact. However, Aloy never got further development once the collaboration period ended. This made her one of the more disappointing 5-star characters in that game, with players locked out from upgrading her via constellations.
Hopefully, the same doesn't happen with any future collaboration Hoyoverse does for its games.
