Street Fighter 6 is getting a much-requested feature when it gets its big update later in late September. When Capcom updates its flagship fighter next month, it's adding the replay takeover feature, on top of a new training AI, and guest character Terry Bogard.
Replay takeover allows players to watch their match replays, and then jump in any time to try out different ways to handle specific situations during said match. This feature first made its modern appearance in the community-led rollback netcode update to Guilty Gear XX Accent Core +R on Steam. Since then, the feature has made its way to other fighting games, such as Tekken 8 which had the feature at launch.
Now, Street Fighter 6 is finally getting the replay takeover feature, adding something serious competitive players are bound to use a lot. Not only can players replay situations as themselves, but they can also take over their opponent's character to try things against their own offense.
Whether or not the feature is limited only to a players own replays, or if they can try it on replays of fights not involving them, however, is unknown.
Street Fighter 6 is also getting another interest feature on top of replay takeover. The new "V(irtual) Rival Match" feature allows players to train against AI opponents molded after players of specific ranks.
The feature looks to be similar to the ghost feature implemented in games such as Killer Instinct, Samurai Shodown, Tekken 8 and next year's Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves. In theory, this feature will allow players to fight AI opponents that fight more like real people, though some implementations have been less accurate to actual human play than others (looking at you Samurai Shodown).
Here's hoping Street Fighter 6's implementation is one the more accurate side of things.
All-in-all, Street Fighter 6's upcoming patch looks to add a lot to an already full-featured fighting game. Even if the prospect of the series' first guest character isn't enough to get some people excited, replay takeover and V(irtual) Rival Match are great tools for players looking to up their game in Street Fighter.
Street Fighter 6's next update is set to arrive on September 24, 2024.
