A Masterful Tribute to Juan Luna: A Revolutionary Hero's Tale Reimagined Through Theater
In the latest production by the Philippine Stagers Foundation, "Juan Luna: Isang Sarsuela", Atty. Vince Tañada reminds us that heroism doesn't require martyrdom. Anyone, regardless of their circumstances, can embody the spirit of a hero by loving their country selflessly.
We were fortunate enough to attend one of the four daily performances on September 19 at the SM North Sky Dome. The energy and passion displayed by the cast, even during the final show of the day, were nothing short of remarkable. It's clear that this production was designed to leave a lasting impact on its audiences, combining the high-energy dance numbers, moving vocals, and compelling storytelling that audiences have come to expect from the Philstagers.
"Juan Luna: Isang Sarsuela" draws inspiration from the 140th anniversary of Juan Luna's Spoliarium, which is on display at the National Museum of Fine Arts. Atty. Tañada, who not only directs and produces but also stars as Juan Luna, shared his vision for the show: "What drew me to this production was its exploration of Man vs. Himself—a self-examination that humanizes our heroes. It is a story of Juan Luna's flaws, struggles, and triumphs, but it also tells us that anyone can be a hero despite imperfections. We hope to inspire audiences to embrace this concept."
More than a musical, this sarsuela is also an educational experience, enriching viewers' understanding of history by showcasing aspects of Filipino heroes that are often overlooked in textbooks. The cast's portrayal of Juan Luna, José Rizal, Marcelo H. del Pilar, and Antonio Luna brings a refreshing and humanizing take on their struggles, all while seamlessly weaving a moving love story into the narrative.
The show is choreographed by Gerald Magallanes, with music directed by Pipo Cifra. The lead actors include Vince Tañada, Johnrey Rivas, John Arcenas, JP Lopez, Jomar Bautista, and a wide array of talented performers who bring the lives of these historical figures to the stage.
In closing, Atty. Tañada encouraged everyone to watch "Juan Luna: Isang Sarsuela", not just to appreciate its entertainment value but to reflect on the show's deeper message: "Being a hero is difficult, but it is possible for everyone—flaws and all."
