When Capcom first announced its latest classic fighting game collections, it revealed that they were skipping Xbox. Now, the company announced that it's working with Microsoft to bring both the Marvel Vs. Capcom Fighting Collection and Capcom Fighting Collection 2 to Xbox One sometime in 2025.
Both Marvel Vs. Capcom Fighting Collection and Capcom Fighting Collection 2 were originally only announced for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and PC. No reason was given for why Microsoft's Xbox platform was being skipped. (Read: Capcom Fighting Collection 2 brings back Capcom vs SNK 2 and more classic Capcom arcade fighters)
The omission of Xbox prompted many to theorize that the cause was a technical limitation, specifically that Capcom's MT Framework engine that it was using to run the games could no longer support the platform.
While Capcom has neither confirmed nor denied the claim, the message that they're undergoing "technical discussions with our partners at Microsoft" does hint that some technical issues were to blame.
The technical discussions in question do mean that Marvel Vs. Capcom Fighting Collection on Xbox will launch much later than its PC, Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 versions. No word on whether Capcom Fighting Collection 2 on Xbox will arrive in a similarly late fashion, as that game has no solid release date other than a nebulous "2025."
That said, regardless of whether one or both titles is delayed on Xbox, this is still a win for fighting game fans who are still on the platform.
Marvel Vs. Capcom Fighting Collection arrives in digital form on PC, Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 on September 12, 2024 with a physical release on PS4 and Switch to follow on November 22, 2024.
