The Legacy of Kain series is coming back to the spotlight with remasters of two of its best titles. At the recent PlayStation State of Play, Crystal Dynamics revealed that Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1-2 Remastered would be arriving on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and PC on December 10, 2024.
Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1-2 Remastered marks yet another collaboration between Crystal Dynamic and Aspyr to bring back one of the former's classic gamesThe two companies previously released STAR WARS: Battlefront Classic Collection and Tomb Raider I-III Remastered. This time, they're bringing back both Soul Reaver games on the 25th anniversary of the first game's release.
While the series got its start with Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain on the PlayStation, it was arguably the two Soul Reaver games on PlayStation and PlayStation 2 (and PC) respectively that saw the series reach its zenith. (Read: 8 Great video game remakes that let us revisit past classics)
The Soul Reaver games focus on Raziel, former lieutenant of original protagonist Kain, who has been condemned to an eternity of torment for surpassing his master. Becoming the titular "Soul Reaver" at the behest of an elder god, Raziel's quest takes him through various points in the history of the world of Nosgoth. Here, he uncovers an ancient conspiracy involving him and Kain that could change the fate of human- and vampire-kind alike.
Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1-2 Remastered takes those two original games and gives them the same treatment as Tomb Raider I-III Remastered, allowing players to seamlessly switch between not just original and updated visuals, but also the original control scheme and a more modern one that should more familiar to newer players.
To ensure the accuracy of the remasters, Aspyr states that Crystal Dynamics provided their developers with the original source code for both games. This hopefully means that Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1-2 Remastered is as accurate to the originals as can be when it arrives on December 10, 2024.
