After months of speculation and leaks, Sony finally revealed the PlayStation 5 Pro. Not only did the company reveal that the advanced features of PS5 Pro, but it also confirmed that pre-orders for it will open soon.
The PS5 Pro is being billed by Sony as "most visually impressive way to play games on PlayStation." The console features an upgraded GPU with advanced ray tracing and the new PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution AI upscaling solution.
Specifically, the PS5 Pro's GPU has 67 percent more compute units than the current base PlayStation 5 with 28% faster memory. Sony claims that this enables up to 45 percent faster rendering, with more powerful ray tracing that casts double the rays at triple the speed of the current console.
On top of this, the new GPU features what Sony is calling PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, Sony's take on a machine-learning-driven AI upscaling solution similar to Nvidia's Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) or AMD's Radeon Super Resolution (RSR).
In theory, this should allow for up to 8K resolutions at respectable framerates, especially with VRR.
The graphical enhancements can also apply to PlayStation 4 games played via backward compatibility on PS5, via what Sony is calling "PS5 Pro Game Boost." Finally, the console will feature Wi-FI 7.
PS5 Pro pre-order dates
For gamers interested in the upgraded console, PS5 Pro pre-orders are set to open soon. Specifically, countries where direct.playstation.com is available will be able to pre-order the PS5 Pro by September. Meanwhile, pre-orders for other participating retailers will open on October 10, 2024.
Whether this applies to all regions and countries, however, is unknown. When Sony launched the original PS5 first launched in 2020, it did so in a staggered fashion, with certain regions getting it earlier than others. However, this was due mostly to the supply chain issues affecting tech products due to the global COVID-19 pandemic.
PS5 Pro price
Even if PS5 pre-orders open globally at the same day, one other factor that may dissuade some buyers is the price. The console has a manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) of $699.99, which converts to Ph₱ 39,405 as of reporting time. That cost also excludes the optical disc drive, which players will need to purchase separately. (Read: PS5 Pro leak hints that it might not come with an optical disc drive)
