We explore how AI is revolutionising interior design startups in Singapore

By Tech Collective on September 30, 2024

Interior design startups in Singapore are increasingly using novel technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) to revolutionise their work processes and ecosystems. The AI market is set to reach USD 6.72 billion in 2024 and is on target to rise to USD 30.30 billion by 2030. Several factors contribute to the two separate industries integrating seamlessly right now.

Companies like Corten Interior Solutions and Wolf Studio use AI in interior design, fitting various spaces with quality products, style, and artistry. Corten also manufactures sustainable furniture, vital for environmental protection, reducing one's carbon footprint, promoting a circular economy, and more.

AI can change the future of gaming, but what does this mean for gaming in Southeast Asia?

While stakeholders in the interior design sector can see the value of new tech, AI is still relatively recent and slowly making its way into the industry. Statista says its growth worldwide is because of many factors. Firstly, AI applications have greater access to customer and market data, an essential component in developing machine-learning (ML) algorithms.

Secondly, the demand for workplace automation has led to companies replacing legacy systems with today's disruptive technologies. Plus, advancements in computing power and cloud computing infrastructures ensure more powerful and efficient AI applications.

For example, the Generative AI market should earn USD 1.32 billion in 2024 and grow to USD 13.04 billion by 2030. It helps businesses scale by creating ideas, analysing fashion trends and consumer preferences, monitoring inventories, engaging customers through chatbots, and mitigating risks through predictive analysis.

Singapore's AI-driven designs are the next big thing in improving sector efficiency, reducing waste, and promoting sustainable practices.

How AI technologies are integrating with interior design processes

A well-designed office interior contributes to employee productivity and company culture. Office designers can help businesses reflect their brands by creatively arranging their workplaces. For homeowners, a good layout enhances airflow and house aesthetics, creating a wonderful ambience for the family.

Some ways in which AI technologies are impacting interior design are:

Algorithm-driven design tools: AI is not just about efficiency; it's also about enhancing creativity. The Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) and SIXIDES, an interior design tech and renovation platform, harness the power of AI to inspire new design themes. Its machine-learning algorithms use elements like furniture and colours to create design themes, sparking fresh ideas for designers and customers.

The system can generate a price quotation instantly, making the design process even more seamless.

Virtual reality: Mind-bending platforms offering virtual reality (VR) or augmented reality (AR) can help experts visualise the space they want to fill. They can create mockups to sell the vision of how the room will turn out. AI can generate 3D models of rooms, presenting thoughts on colours and themes and their effect on people's moods and emotions.

Personalised recommendations: Tech can predict trends and understand individual preferences. Its predictive analytics features can establish what would work best for each client. Analysing the customer's historical profile can predict future purchases, ensuring the design recommendations meet their unique style and needs.

Designing efficient layouts: AI is not just about aesthetics but also practicality. Once users input various data, such as room size, it can quickly generate home or office designs that maximise space utilisation. In a land-scarce country like Singapore, this can be a game-changer.

Furthermore, the solutions can generate an energy-efficient layout and recommend using sustainable materials to protect the environment.

Managing design processes: Companies can navigate multiple projects, track budgets, stay up-to-date with customer preferences, know the deadlines, and more with AI tech.

The future of AI in interior design in Singapore

Finally, the nation-state has various regulatory frameworks for AI to test governance and establish structures for regulating powerful artificial intelligence platforms like ChatGPT and Dall-E. Despite this, interior design startups in Singapore face challenges like the cost of technology and labour, employee illiteracy and upskilling needs, designer expertise, and funding shortages.

However, the potential impact of AI in interior design is significant. AI-driven solutions could lead to a more efficient and sustainable industry, addressing critical issues such as space optimisation and energy efficiency.

Moreover, while AI offers numerous benefits, potential risks and downsides abound. Some tools may lead to the end of interior design professionals since most of the information is publicly available. RoomGPT is one helpful design tool for homeowners to analyse and redesign a room's photo, enabling people to identify the themes they want to implement. This widespread availability of such tools could reduce the demand for professional interior designers, leading to job displacement in the industry.

Nevertheless, these timely innovations will push Singapore's smart city project further. Singapore National AI Strategy 2.0 was launched in 2023 to transform the economy using artificial intelligence. The sector has many growth opportunities, like smart home technology integration and collaboration in the ecosystem through partnerships, seminars, industry funding, and certification, which should enhance the market. Overall, if the country maintains its consumer-driven approach, it will thrive.
