That post stunned Abap (Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines), the boxing agency, and the PSC, which, in fairness, has been more generous in supporting athletes than the previous admin.

Styling hair with a twist
May 14, 2021
WHEN a man decides to have his hair cut, it's usually done in a barbershop with a male barber. When a woman wants to cut, style, color her hair, it's usually in a hair salon with either a woman hairstylist or a gay one. Despite gender norms being more flexible nowadays in terms of one's occupation, there are some things that Filipinos still think of as a feminine job or a masculine one.
But these career stereotypes don't bother Joey Genturales at all. Instead, he focuses on his career growth and his professional relationship with his clients. Growing up ...

May 14, 2021
"MAYBE you're living in my world now, I'm not living in yours."
That was a line from the movie Sing Street, said by a young man to the school bully who once bullied him early in the film. This time, the boy who has found his voice as a songwriter and vocalist in a band, did not flinch. He knows what he has become and the bully and his words mean nothing to him.
Somehow I imagined those words when Retired Justice Antonio Carpio took President Rodrigo Duterte's challenge seriously to debate on the West Philippine Sea issue. It ...

Harvard scientists unveil solid-state lithium battery that can be charged and discharged at least 10,000 times
May 14, 2021

US scientists have created a new design for lithium-metal, solid-state batteries that should avoid the formation of dendrites that grow into the electrolyte. Their multilayered battery could potentially recharge electric vehicles within 10 to 20 minutes.
Researchers at Harvard claim to have developed a lithium-metal, solid-state battery with improved stability and increased ability to prevent lithium (Li) dendrite penetration.
"Our research shows that the solid-state battery could be fundamentally different from the commercial liquid electrolyte lithium-ion battery," said researcher Xin Li. "By studying their fundamental thermodynamics, we can unlock superior performance and harness their abundant opportunities."
The battery ...

Serama chickens are the smallest in the world, but you really couldn't tell by their attitude. Seeing them pose with their head pulled back and chest sticking out, you'd think they were some sort of feathered bodybuilders.
The Serama chicken breed can be traced back all the way to the 1600s, to the Kelantan province of Malaysia, but the current strain can be attributed to Wee Yean Een, a breeder who popularized it during the 1970s and even gave the chicken the Serama name, after King Rama of Thailand.

Tell it to SunStar: Favoritism at the oval?
May 14, 2021
By a concerned citizen
The reopening of the Cebu City Sports Center after more than a year since it was closed made a lot of people happy, especially those who miss jogging or walking at the oval.
The current restrictions imposed by management are understandable and necessary to ensure that users comply with minimum health protocols like the wearing of masks and social distancing.
However, I feel that enforcers don't treat everybody equally. They accost some but leave others alone. It doesn't help that many of their co-employees are the main violators.
Nalzaro: Religion and science are incompatible
May 14, 2021
Religion, faith and science are indeed incompatible. Religion and science both offer explanations for why life and the universe exist. Science relies on tested empirical evidence and observation. Religion relies on subjective belief in a creator. Religious faith is of two kinds: evidence-sensitive and evidence insensitive. The former views faith as closely coordinated with demonstrable truths. The latter more strictly as an act of the will of the religious believer alone. The former includes evidence garnered from the testimony and works of other believers.

New discovery promises to bring singlet fission enhanced C-Si solar cells nearer to commercial production
May 14, 2021
New research from Australia has shown that singlet fission solar cells do not only have the potential to raise the theoretical efficiency of the PV technology to unexpected levels but also to provide a better temperature behavior and longer duration compared to conventional PV devices. The scientists believe that this technique may help conventional crystalline silicon solar cell technologies reach efficiencies close to 30%.
Singlet fission is the quantum mechanics that could allow breaking the theoretical barrier for the efficiency of silicon photovoltaic cells. It consists of a photophysical process in molecules and molecular aggregates, whereby a singlet exciton ...

Vergeire said the vital signs screening has been identified as one of the factors causing the long queues at vaccination sites. Vaccination teams check an individual's blood pressure, temperature and pulse rate, among others.
