Tuesday night open mics at Takoma Spark*.
School of Musical Traditions | 7112 Willow Ave., Takoma Park, MD 20912 | signup at 6.30pm, music at 7pm
Sponsored in conjunction with Institute of Musical Traditions, this is a small LISTENING ROOM open mic. The evening is free, but every night we have a featured artist and we hope that you can support them by tipping or purchasing merch!
Tonight's Featured Artist hails from the west coast, brought to us via a fan and friend in Pittsburgh, PA - please welcome Elizabeth Mar!
Mar wrote her first song at the age of 8 after her grandfather taught her how to write a poem. Pairing poetry and song was natural to the budding singer and in her own words, "When I learned about poetry, I found a life line and a fascination that stuck and has helped pull me through the ups and downs of life. I'm so grateful for that, for this interest that keeps deepening.."
In her 20's Mar left her day jobs and apartment behind to play music full time. She toured widely with her duo turned trio "Quiles & Cloud" which added lush harmonies and intricate instrumentals to the songs she primarily penned. They played everything from intimate house concerts to huge music festivals and were awarded Best Duo of Fresh Grass Festival 2014 and went on to sign with Compass Records out of Nashville. Sadly, the band broke up but Mar never lost touch with the music at her core and continued to write and workshop new material on her own.
Renewed and renamed, Mar has emerged in full force and will be touring in July of 2023. She will be releasing a compilation of songs played live at the intimate and magical Wind River Studios in Santa Cruz California. The songs on the album reflect not only the sadness and longing but also the hope and rebirth that are universal to the human experience.
This is NOT a restaurant so bring your own food or drink if you want to eat or drink! We have a house keyboard, but it's a small space, unable to support acts larger than a quartet, and no drumkits. 2 songs, 10 minutes, 1 pun - whichever's shorter. Any music that is pre-recorded** must NOT be subject to DRM flagging as we are webcasting Live on Facebook.com/robsopenmics, YouTube.com/robsopenmics and Twitch.tv/ilyaimy.
*Wuzza Takoma Spark you might ask? Dave Eisner has chosen to commemorate an arts collective we used to have here in Takoma Park by naming this NEW performance space at School of Musical Traditions after our sadly-departed Rob Nicholson's strange and wonderful gatherings. Takoma Spark - to spark creativity and inspiration into a warm and inviting, roaring (but ne'r searing) open flame!
**Additionally, come prepared to PLAY that music. Please be prepared to output to either a quarter inch or XLR cable. No, you may not send me the track.
