Review
Normally for me when it comes to gaming anything fast and full of guns and explosions is definitely what I'm looking for in a game and Flashout 3 from first impressions seems to fit the bill perfectly for me, so getting the opportunity to review the game was a big plus point for me.
Being a fan of futuristic racers from the past consoles, one in particular would have to be the legendary Wipeout which for a time was what you would buy a PS for. The fast paced action packed racing was certainly popular with gamers as it spawned many similar games over the years, Flashout is one of those games where you can definitely tell where the inspiration came from and that is not in the slightest a bad point at all, I mean if you're going to copy makes sure you copy the most iconic title.
From the futuristic menus you can choose the different modes that are pretty much standard to this style of game, campaign mode which is a type of championship or tournament mode, single race which lets you try out single races on different tracks - this is a good way of getting used to the handling and physics before you enter the campaign, lastly there is a split screen multiplayer mode which is a back to the old school split screen couch battle like it used to be.
The best way to unlock better vehicles and better weapons is to play through the campaign mode, as the more you win the more you unlock. Within the campaign you do get different types of races to compete in, standard race which is simply get to the finish line first, demolition which is the racer with the most destructions wins and knock out which reduces the amount of racers after a period of time right down to the last racer on the track. Now although I did find the campaign fun the gameplay becomes pretty repetitive after a while with the only major difference being the different tracks but the overall game feels pretty samey but still very much enjoyable.
I feel the game is good fun as it is but feel that an online multiplayer mode would have elevated the game to the next level. Playing couch split screen is fun especially taking out your mates next to you with the plethora of weapons available but I feel the multiplayer would be opened up somewhat with the introduction of the online aspect but that could just be my opinion.
Graphics and Sound
In terms of graphics the game does stand out although it is technically a past gen game it still looks good on the current gen consoles with it's powerfully bright colours and over the top explosions. The main selling point of the game is the physics, the tracks throw you around like you're in a washing machine - one minute you're running on a normal straight track then you hit a turn and are flipped upside down and everything goes a bit haywire but totally in a good way and with all this flying about the game handles the graphics perfectly.
The soundtrack of the game is great, a fast paced euro pop style sound that works in harmony with the game style. In game the effects are good with the super powered engines sounding as authentic as you would imagine (never heard a space cruiser in real life to compare) The sound effects of the weapons are good and add to the over the top feel of the game play.
Summary
Time now then to put my thoughts into a summary, overall although I've played this type of game before I felt Flashout 3 brings a fresh twist to the game style, the fast paced racing with weaponised combat work well to add to the competitive edge of the game. When playing alone the gameplay does become repetitive but still has a fun feel to it. Overall I think I would recommend to check out I definitely think it's worth the punt if you're after a fun racer.
Verdict-Out of 5
GOOD
I give Flashout 3 a good rating of 3 a good bit of fun, gets slightly repetitive but still good fun. The couch multiplayer is a good nod to the good old days of gaming.
