'Paghilom' ready for showing in cinemas
From its original concept as a short film, "Paghilom" has bloomed into a full-length movie under the title "Paghilom (Sa Luha Ng Buhay)" and is now on its way to local theaters in selected areas around Metro Manila for public viewing.
Playing the lead role in the movie is veteran actor Tony Boy dela Rea, who worked with seasoned director Elwood Perez during the 70's. In "Paghilom," he is also a first-time movie producer, together with his sister Avelina dela Rea, who is the executive producer. Avelina is a former commissioner of the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC). They have embarked on this filmmaking journey under their movie outfit called Cine Silang.
"Paghilom" revolves around a family with an authoritarian father, Alfon, played by Dela Rea and his submissive wife, Ophel, played by former beauty queen and actress Ms. Jane Umali.
The couple has two grown-up sons, named Mark (played by Piolo Broso) and Reny Boy, (played by Joshua De Gzman). Mark was to become a soldier as dictated by his father Alfon. In real life, Piolo revealed that he is a soldier along with the other male members of his family. Rene Boy, who rebelled after the death of his brother Mark in a car accident, decided to go to Manila to be independent, away from his father and to pursue his own dreams.
Unfortunately, Alfon's heavy-handed way of raising his two sons resulted in a series of unfortunate events and tragedy, and had to suffer and deal with severe guilt. Tony Boy, in this movie, tackles the dynamics of the conflicts in the family, the dominating role of a father, the emotional struggle between the husband and the suffering wife, and most of all, to what happened to the lives of his two beloved sons.
Also joining Tony Boy in this movie are Ms. Azenith Briones, who used to be the leading lady of No. 1 comedian in the Philippines, Dolphy. She plays the role of Jenny, a good friend of Ophel. Bridge Romero, played Dr. Bong Guinto, Azenth's husband and doctor of Alfon.
Popular singer and actor Lance Raymundo plays Dr. Marco Guevarra, a good friend of Dr. Bong Guinto, who referred Dr. Guevarra to Alfon and Ophel. Lance Raymundo played a pivotal role in this movie, finding a way for Alfon and Ophel to overcome their grief and start their journey of acceptance, forgiveness and healing.
According to Lance, his background as a biology student during his college years helped him internalize the role of being a good doctor in this movie and explains effectively matters such as finding the DNA of a child even when a parent died a long time ago. Lance said his parents wanted him to be a doctor, and in two other movies he also dons the white robe of a physician. "My parents would certainly love to watch the movies where I play a doctor," Lance said.
Other important characters in the movie are, Amba, as the mystery woman in the life of Mark, played by Ms. Sharmaine Suarez, as well as Geneses Esguerra, the boy who changed everything in Alfon's life and his family. There are many twists and turns in this movie that make it extremely interesting and exciting to the viewers as these events happen in today's families.
But, the highlight of this movie is unlocking the mystery that surrounds Mark's life. And finding the truth in the end, finally appeased the loss and guilt that Alfon has to carry and his family for a long time. It is like a loss and a rebirth at the same time, but a very welcoming event for Alfon and his family.
Tony Boy said he embarked on this project because of his passion for movies, while Avelina on her part wanted to leave a legacy for their family. "We want our audience to appreciate their family more after watching this film. This is a feel-good movie that aims to highlight that there will always be ways to heal, as long as we learn to forgive. It is a hard lesson we all have to learn," the brother and sister shared.
The film was shot in Silang, Cavite, where the Dela Rea family traces its roots and with the goal of showcasing the beauty of the town, especially their ancestral home and the resort that they built where much of the shooting was done. It also features one of the oldest churches in the Philippines with white marble retablo, the only retablo built by the Jesuits in the Philippines and the second oldest retablo in the country.
The movie was directed by Teejay Gonzales with Lala Servano as assistant director. "Paghilom (Sa Luha Ng Buhay) is rated General Patronage (GP) and will be shown in selected theaters in Metro Manila next month.
