Canalys has officially released its newest smartphone shipments report. There's a new player here, Transsion. It is the umbrella of Itel, Infinix, and Tecno. Their phones have surprisingly great specs at very affordable prices. There are times when their phones have special features generally restricted to flagships but you could now buy at a midrange cost, such as the Infinix Zero X with its Periscope camera at PHP 13K. Canalys' latest report suggests that smartphone shipments are slowly gaining because the drop in shipments decreased to just 10% this second quarter in contrast with Q4 2022. According to the data, Samsung remains the world's largest smartphone maker by sales volume because the company shipped over 53 million units globally. Apple is at second at 44 million units followed by Xiaomi, Oppo and OnePlus, and a new player, Transsion Group! Despite the large sales volume, all companies, aside from Transsion showed a decline in annual growth. Transsion primarily sells in developing markets in Africa and Asia and their phones have spectacular specs-to-price ratios. For instance, the newly-released POVA 5, which is a recycled POVA 4, uses an AMOLED screen at a sub-PHP6K price tag. Even Xiaomi and its sub-brand POCO have to stick with IPS LCD at that range. The company primarily uses MediaTek chipsets but they did have Snapdragon-powered phones in the past. Though Transsion's phones are affordable, they are without compromise. For instance, Tecno and Infinix's interface is infamously known for their high number of bloatware and apparent lack of software upgrades which their competitors have. These two companies also tend to recycle their smartphones and call them new. For example, the Infinix Note 11 4G and 12 4G are nearly identical apart from design changes. Though, when it comes to recycling phones, Xiaomi is still a much larger offender. At least Tecno and Infinix are more consistent with naming.
