Overview taken from the official game description on the website PlayStation store page.
Back in the day when platformers ruled the world there was one arcade game that was for me (apart from Streets of Rage that is) and that was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles the arcade game, it just had everything I wanted, all out action with over the top bad guys to defeat - being a big fan of the Turtles having the chance to play as my heroes on the screen was definitely something that I wanted.
Fast forward to modern day and the teams at Raw Thrills and Cradle Games have brought back an icon but with modern styling in the style of the latest Nickelodeon cartoon reincarnation of the Turtles, this nod to the classic arcade game is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Arcade: Wrath of the Mutants and it brings back all that was great in the original arcade classic and blasts it back onto our modern consoles.
The gameplay is strange but in the best way possible,.it has the charm of retro side scrolling platformer but the modern polish of a game out today, it still has the combat mechanics you'll be familiar with and the enemies range in difficulty. Although the game is predominantly made for a co-op experience it works particularly well as a solo title with you taking control of each of the different Turtle characters (Donatello is definitely my favourite) The game is a port of the original 2017 release from Raw Thrills and with the spit and polish it has been given it really is a good classic beat em up.
For me the only parts where the game falls a little short is the level selection and the gameplay which can feel a little similar on each level. You get access to 4 levels straight off the bat (Amusement Park, Sewer, NYC, Dimension X and TCRI) with the Shredder level locked at start. The Amusement Park and NYC levels are my favourite with them having that retro feel to the styling I really enjoyed playing through these levels in particular, don't get me wrong I had fun with the other but it was these two levels that I mostly enjoyed. The combat mechanics definitely have taken deep inspiration from the original arcade title but that is not a bad thing at all as I really enjoyed the simplicity of the game play, you can up the level of difficulty if you so wish but if you are less experienced in this type of game then you'll need to make that slower progress.
I think personally I would've liked to have seen more of a scripted story to the game it basically feels like a collection a mini games that you can play through with your friends or alone. Playing with friends is definitely the way to go with this one as it's a lot more fun with your mates together rather than trying to play through it alone, although my first play through alone was alot of fun and did bring back some core childhood memories.
The levels themselves are relatively small which isn't a major issue but I just wish there were more of them to give the game more longevity as there's only so many times you can play through the game doing the same things, maybe this is for future DLC releases.
Graphics and Sound
In terms of graphics I really like the style the developers have gone with, a cartoon style from the modern Nickelodeon show. The game levels are well crafted and really add to the intense atmosphere. The enemies are also well animated and look great when involved in combat. The game basically looks like you're watching the Nickelodeon cartoon.
The soundtrack of the game has a good flavour to it and will have you punching the air in delight. The voice acting in the game is great all of the character voices sounded authentic and give lots of comedic quips that will give you a little giggle here and there.
Verdict-Out of 5 ⭐
⭐⭐⭐⭐
GOOD
I give Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Arcade: Wrath of the Mutants a good score of 4 ⭐ a good nostalgic side scrolling beat em up, would've got full marks if it had more of a storyline to it (campaign mode) but on the whole an enjoyable experience.
