At the Summer Game Fest, Capcom just revealed that Street Fighter 6 would be getting the first-ever guest fighters in the series' history in the form of Terry Bogard and Mai Shiranui.
Guest fighters have become common in fighting games over the past decade or so. However, while Capcom has loaned Street Fighter characters out to other companies — Akuma appeared in Tekken 7 while Ryu and Chun-Li appeared in Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid — it has generally refrained from adding them to the main Street Fighter games. Street Fighter 6 looks to change that with the addition of guest characters Terry Bogard and Mai Shiranui from rival company SNK's Fatal Fury and King of Fighters franchises. Both are coming as part of Street Fighter 6's Year 2 of DLC characters.
The addition of Terry and Mai into Street Fighter 6 represents a significant moment for a couple of reasons. First, there's the aforementioned fact about them being the Street Fighter series' first guests ever in a mainline, non-crossover game. The second reason is that it represents the first time we've had a proper crossover between characters between Capcom and SNK since the turn of the millennium.
During the tail end of the 1990s, Capcom and SNK were the biggest names in arcade fighting games, with multiple hit fighting game entries. The rivalry between both companies eventually came to a head when they decided to collaborate on a series of crossover fighting games.
The games that came out of the collaboration, such as SvC Chaos: SNK vs Capcom and Capcom Vs SNK 2, represent some of the most memorable, and in the case of CvS2, competitively viable fighting games from that era.
Since then, fans have clamored for another crossover title between the two companies — specifically a third Capcom Vs SNK game. However, fans had to simply make do with re-releases of the older titles, until now.
Terry and Mai's appearance as Street Fighter 6's first guest characters represents the possibility of further collaboration between both companies. Even if it doesn't result in a Capcom vs SNK 3, just having characters from both company's appear in their fighters could capture some of the feeling of their old crossover games.
As for the rest of Street Fighter 6's Year 2 DLC characters, Terry and Mai will be joined by the revived M. Bison and Elena. M. Bison will be the first character drop sometime this summer, followed by Terry in the Fall, Elena in Winter and finally Mai in Spring of 2025.
Street Fighter 6 is currently available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, PC and Xbox Series consoles. Meanwhile, SNK is working on Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves for which SNK revealed two new characters — series veteran B. Jenet and newcomer Vox Reaper. Whether or not Street Fighter characters will appear in COtW is as of yet unknown.
