36th Gawad Alternatibo Showcases the Best in Filipino Filmmaking
The 36th edition of the "Gawad Alternatibo Para sa Pelikula at Video" presents an array of Filipino films showcasing the best in alternative storytelling this 2024.
Established in 1987, "Gawad Alternatibo" is the longest film competition in the country and Asia, harvesting the best of Philippine films competing in various categories Narrative, Experimental, Documentation, and Animation.
In the "Narrative Category," competing films including: "Alien" by Drexler Jaramel and Dexter Paul De Jesus; "Ang Alamat Kung Bakit Kalabaw Lang Ang Tumatanda" by Ronnie Ramos; "Ang Huling Liham" by Miguel R. Potestades; "Ang Pamilya Maguol" by Jermaine Tulbo; "#Bagets" by Sharon Lester Cristal Paraico; "Beep Beep" by Iane Patacsil and Raya Martinez; "Desync" by Minerva Navasca; "Lola. PSD" by Coby Mercado; "One Day, Three Autumns" by Bridget Rabo Ng-Ting; "Rumbled Of Earth" by Carl Joseph C. Lara; "To Drown A Fish" by Hanns Winald P. Scheewe; "Dayang" by Savannah Georgia Concepcion Malumbres; "Dolor" by Christian Joshua D. Lomahan; "Etaku I-Bogwa" by Jessica Namujhe; "Gelo" by Hendrix U. Sanchez; "Ikaw Ang Liwanag Ko" by Gina Tobias; "Kasama Kang Tumanda" by Bianca Maxine Villanueva; "Los Mandayas" by Jhayzen U. Parañal; "Lunod" by Mads Miraflor; "My Boy Superman" by Jonathan Jurilla; "Singoy (Diwata ng Sitio Kalangitan)" by Shaira Mari A. Guiyab; and "Sino at Saan" by Ma Alyanna Cassandra Saulong Molera.
Participating films for the Animation category are: "All The Time" by Anya Zulueta and Dominic Zulueta; "Ang Tanim Ay 'Di Biro" by Ivan Hil Año, Sylvia Mae Feliciano, Micah Ella Gubatina, and Sophia Louise Sumera; "Astra Lumina" by Jeremiah Cuyas; "Biringan: Hanapan Ng Nawawala" by Mercy C. De Felix; "Blinding Lights" by Daniza Sy and Angelo Lubao; "Connect" by Albene Q. Igrubay; "Daisy" by Pepot Atienza, Aditi Dixit, and Shecid Aguilera; "Haidi" by Jericho Jesus R. Peria; "Ili-Ili by John Clister D. Santos; "Ngayon At Kahapon" by Mitzi Ann P. Delima; "Present" by Matthew Elijah Baga Rañada; "Wetsetales: Mengal Kapitan Tercero" by Jade Dandan Evangelista; and "Wet Willie" by Constantine Theo Remular.
Films in contention for the Experimental category are: "Apapatikansimamsim" by Andreia Leigh P. Bernardo; "A Tiny Inferno" by Paul Vincent Caringal; "Baligho (Absurd) by Bob Macabenta; "Daluyong Ng Ingay" by Demie Dangla; "Dominion" by Bea Mariano; "Litraso" by Clarisse Olalia Tagayun; "Monochromatic Raunbow" by Ja Turla; "Rod" by Ulap Chua; "Salang" by "T" - Tristan Marco D. Ortega; "Someday, I Will Blow Up And Die!" by Aaron Alsol; "There's A Mountain Nearby And I Don't Like It" by Grant Frondozo; and "Waiting Sheds The Life Off A Moth" by Minnesota S. Flores.
This year, GMA 7's multi-awarded documentary program, "I-Witness," marked its special debut in the 36th edition of the "Gawad Alternatibo," presenting some of the best Philippine investigative documentaries that delve into subjects of public interest and thought-provoking stories.
Featured "i-Witness" investigative documentaries in the 36th Gawad Alternatibo Special Programming are: "Sisid Sa Putik" by Mav Gonzales; "Boat To School" by Howie Severino; "Bawat Barya" by Atom Araullo; and Peabody Award recipient "Ambulansiang De Paa" by Kara David.
These documentaries explore important and often overlooked topics, provide an in-depth look at various issues, and uncover hidden truths that are not easily seen by the public eye.The "Gawad Alternatibo" finalists will be screened simultaneously with Cinemalaya 2024, on August 3 to 9, at the Ayala Malls Manila Bay. The awarding ceremony is on August 10, 2024. All screenings are free and open to the public.
