Overview
On her first day back from maternity leave, Detective Sam Shephard is thrown straight into a cold-case investigation – the unsolved murder of a highly respected Anglican Priest in Dunedin.
The case has been a thorn in the side of the Police hierarchy, and for her boss it's personal. With all the witness testimony painting a picture of a dedicated church and family man, what
possible motive could there have been for his murder?
But when Sam starts digging deeper into the case, it becomes apparent that someone wants the sins of the past to remain hidden. And when a new potential witness to the crime is found brutally murdered, there is pressure from all quarters to solve the case before anyone else falls prey.
But is it already too late…?

Review
As you may know by now I love a good thriller but what appeals to me more is one that has a realistic feeling to it so it then becomes more relatable. Prey ticks that box as Detective Sam Sheppard balances a home life with a faltering career that could well about to be invigorated thanks to an opportunity to revisit a cold case that is close to her boss in more ways than one.
The story is quite dark and sets out it's stall from the off as it details the event that sparks the whole story and gives a great background and foundation for what is to come. On her first day back to work from maternity leave Sam is handed the box file containing the case details and told to begin work on it, reluctantly Sam takes it on as she sees it as an opportunity to reignite her career but as she delves deeper she finds alot of holes in the original investigation and becomes invested in solving this case but what does she actually have in her hands? Getting involved in this could well take Sam down a dark dark road, is she mentally and physically ready for this?
At this point I'm pretty much becoming an Orenda Books fan boy they really know a good book to publish and as thrillers go Prey definitely ticks the boxes for me it kept me engaged throughout and equally chilled me in equal parts. This is the first time I've read Vanda Symon's work and I was very impressed with her style, it naturally flowed and built at a gradual pace with a style that excited me and grabbed my attention, an overall greatly written book.
Summary
Time now then for me to put my thoughts into a summary, overall I enjoyed the experience of the book it gripped me from the beginning and didn't let up. I liked how the main character Sam Shepherd came across a relatable and allowed the reader to invest more in the character. I enjoyed the book and will definitely look into more of Vanda's work.
