Overview
A rocky cliff face, the tragic death of his father, a spell in a harsh young offenders' institution and a promising military career cut short all leave Seb Faber's prospects looking bleak. However, an unexpected and lucrative job offer in the City seems to point to a more secure future. Seb turns out to be a natural on the equities trading floor of the City's oldest bank, and this success leads to his selection for a special project.
To add to his change of fortune he falls in love, and deeply. But Seb's personal antennae are picking up anomalies. Perhaps everything is not quite as it seems. As his suspicions grow, he becomes increasingly unsure about who he can trust. Then his whole world is turned upside down. Torn in all directions, Seb fights through the mists of despair to regain his self-control and sense of purpose.
His final steps lead to dramatic and totally unforeseen events in the South African bush.

Review
Sometimes I do like to step away from the norm of my reading pile which consists of mainly thrillers so it is nice sometimes to get your head into something a little different, this time Selection is that book, a bit different but at the same time still very engrossing in its own way telling the story of a young man finding his way through life fighting last demons but still trying to fight the struggle.
The story follows Seb as he leaves a young offenders institute then trying the military path to correct his ways only for that to fall short too things begin to look bleak again for Seb but for someone that has hope there is always a path to success you just need to keep going.
It all changes for Seb when an opportunity arises to work in the city in equities trading which could potentially change his life forever and when Seb shows he's a natural this new life seems to be for him, that is until this new more lucrative path leads him to a project that could change everything all over again.
The book gives you so much in terms of the different emotions it pulls together, there's heartbreak, there's hope and there's heart racing intrigue all together in one explosive cocktail, you can't help but feel for Seb as you get to know more about the character as the story progresses along the rollercoaster.
For this to be a debut novel for H.C. Kingsmill Moore is impressive to say the least, the book seems to have the perfect balance making the reading seem to naturally flow. The chapters themselves are relatively short which makes ready feel less of a chore but also be warned it can also make it addictive.
Summary
Time now then to put my thoughts into a summary, overall I enjoyed the book I liked the tempo of the story I felt it naturally grew which made the story feel more immersive. I enjoyed how the underlying theme was one of hope and determination as no matter what life threw at him he came back stronger and kept his fighting mentality. As I said earlier the balance of this book is spot on with equal levels of heart break and joy which will leave you satisfied but ready for what is to come.
