Freedom Wars, one of the hidden gems of Sony's ill-fated PS Vita handheld, will be getting a remastered release early next year care of Bandai Namco Games. Freedom Wars Remastered brings this classic post-apocalyptic action RPG not just to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation, but to Nintendo Switch and Steam as well.
Freedom Wars originally released on PlayStation Vita in 2014. The game took the giant monster slaying action of Monster Hunter and combined it with a post-apocalyptic cyberpunk setting, while adding some shooter mechanics into the mix (though melee combat still existed).
In game, players took control of an amnesiac "Sinner," a person sentenced to a million years of imprisonment for the act of being born. These "Sinners" are sent out by their Panopticon — the city-state that imprisoned them — to fight against giant mechanized monsters called Abductors, as well as Sinners from other Panopticons while rescuing civilians.
Gameplay-wise, in addition to having more emphasis on shooting than similar games like Monster Hunter, Freedom Wars' big gameplay gimmick is the "Thorn," a grappling hook players can use to move around or attach themselves to Abductors. The original game saw generally favorable reviews with most critics noting the potential of its unique take on gameplay loop first established by Monster Hunter. However, the game's potential never lead to anything more, until now.
Freedom Wars Remastered takes the original release and spruces it up for modern hardware, with 4K resolution, upgraded textures and 60fps performance on PlayStation and PC. In addition, the new release will also be tweaking the game's crafting system, overhauling some of the game's other systems and adding selectable difficulty levels.
No specific details on how exactly the game's systems are being tweaked have been released. However, it's likely that fans will hear more about these changes soon with how close the game is to release. Freedom Wars Remastered arrives on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam on January 10, 2025.
