Overview
At twenty years old, five feet eight and with boobs that were 'inconveniently fulsome', Ruth was not quite young enough, tall enough or waif-like enough to ever hope for a meteoric rise to supermodel status. And yet her sheer optimism and questionable grasp on reality led her to abandon her law degree and begin a career with one of the biggest agencies in the world.
Follow Ruth through a rip-roaring, hilarious decade of not-quite-making-it as a supermodel. Fuelled by little more than cigarettes and the stress of her spiralling debt she criss-crosses the world in pursuit of fame and fortune. But how far is she willing to go for this wildly unrealistic dream?
Bridget Jones meets the Devil Wears Prada, How Not to be a Supermodel is a time capsule of a book that dives into one of the world's most fascinating industries. Offering a glimpse into both the high glamour and juddering reality of a by-gone era, this comic memoir tackles the darkest of subjects with the very lightest touch and injects humour and a heart-warming honesty into a story that could have so easily ended a different way.
Overview taken from the official book press release.
Review
Sometimes in life you don't need the dramatic exposé or a gritty behind the scenes tell all shock you just need an honest account of how it is. How Not to be a Supermodel is an as honest as you can possibly make it account of the life of a Supermodel told by ex Supermodel Ruth Crilly and whilst this is an account of her life on the runway.
What I enjoyed most about the book was that Ruth didn't take anything seriously and seems like she takes most things in her stride, growing up a pretty normal girl that didn't really have the "supermodel" sparkle naturally within her it wasn't until later in her youth that the call the runway came.
In her own eyes she didn't have the natural look of a model but others could see what she couldn't but this innocent charm worked to her benefit as she embarked on her journey into the glamorous world.
I've always looked at the fashion world as a bit snotty and a bit away from reality but reading Ruth's story shows a realistic side of it where Ruth takes away some of the sparkle but adds an authentic reality that will endear to the general folk.
I enjoyed Ruth's writing style as she writes as you would talk, a bit like the Ronseal - does what it says on the tin (if you don't know Google it) - she says it as it is which makes the book feel more realistic, she's moved away from the shock tactics of an exposé and gone with a true unpolished reality and that gives the book authenticity and a charm that will endear the reader, you will definitely change your mind.
Summary
Time now then for me to put my thoughts into a summary, overall I enjoyed the book it had a unique charm, Ruth's gun blazing attitude will open eyes and make you change your opinion on the fashion world. Would definitely recommend picking this up especially if you were born in the 80s/90s the different nods to these eras will spark nostalgia.
Verdict-Out of 5 ⭐

GOOD
I give How Not to be a Supermodel a good score of 4 ⭐, an honest look into one of the worlds shadiest industries. If you have an interest in the fashion world or even just like a light hearted read then look no further. Definitely recommend.
Note on The Author
Ruth Crilly is an award-winning online writer and content creator respected for her honest beauty reviews and loved for her hilarious, unfiltered life updates. After spending over a decade as a fashion model, she became one of the UK's first social media stars in 2010 and her eponymous blog has been read more than 50 million times.
Her earlier career as a successful fashion model left her with a fear of tape measures, diminished confidence in her physical appearance and a horrible tendency to rely on self-deprecation as a form of humour.
