'MAKA' Debuts: A Fresh Take on Youth Drama and Music
GMA Public Affairs is set to captivate audiences with its newest youth-oriented drama series, MAKA, premiering on September 21 at 4:45 PM. This exciting new show blends teen drama with musical elements, delivering a fresh narrative that resonates across generations.
MAKA showcases an ensemble cast of talented Gen Z actors, including Sparkle stars Zephanie, Ashley Sarmiento, and Marco Masa, alongside Sparkle teen talents Olive May, John Clifford, Dylan Menor, Chanty Videla from K-Pop group Lapillus, Sean Lucas, and May Ann Basa, also known as "Bangus Girl." Together, they explore the relatable struggles of today's youth while navigating complex relationships with other generations—millennials, Gen X, and boomers.
Set in Douglas MacArthur High School for the Arts, the series follows the experiences of students enrolled in the Arts & Performance (A&P) section, led by their mentor, Sir V, portrayed by veteran actor Romnick Sarmenta. A former renowned but controversial artist, Sir V returns to his hometown and reluctantly accepts a teaching position, only to discover that his students have much to teach him as well.
Joining Romnick are fellow "That's Entertainment" alumni Tina Paner, Jojo Alejar, Sharmaine Arnaiz, and Maricar De Mesa, with seasoned actress Carmen Soriano rounding out the star-studded cast. Directed by best-selling author Rod Marmol, MAKA continues GMA's legacy of creating exceptional youth-oriented programming, reminiscent of iconic shows like "T.G.I.S." and "Click."
Romnick, thrilled to work with the new generation of Sparkle stars, shared his excitement about connecting with his younger co-stars. "I enjoy getting to know people from their age group, especially since they're the same age as my children. It helps me understand my own kids better," Romnick said in an interview. "I hope to share my own experiences with them and learn more about their generation and unique stories."
