Senate Honors Former House Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr.
The Senate has adopted a Resolution authored by Senator Loren Legarda honoring former House Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. for his distinguished career and profound contributions to the Philippines.
De Venecia, fondly known as JDV, served as Speaker of the House of Representatives for an unprecedented five terms from 1992 to 1998 and from 2001 to 2008. As the architect of the "Rainbow Coalition," he played a key role in uniting the country and facilitating the passage of over 200 critical reform laws during President Fidel V. Ramos' administration.
Senator Legarda, who also sponsored Senate Resolution No. 1142, reflected on her personal connection to de Venecia Jr.
"It is worth noting that my own political journey began under the guidance of JDV. In 1998, I won my first senatorial seat as part of his senatorial slate when he ran for President. The trust and confidence he placed in me marked a pivotal moment in my role as a public servant, and I am forever grateful for that opportunity," she said.
De Venecia Jr.'s legislative legacy includes landmark laws such as the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) Law, the Military Bases Conversion Law, and the creation of the Central Bank of the Philippines. His impact extends beyond national politics, with significant roles in journalism, diplomacy, and international cooperation.
"His numerous honors, including the prestigious French Legion of Honor, high decorations from various governments, and honorary doctorates from esteemed universities, reflect his enduring commitment to global diplomacy and cooperation. His creation of the Dollar Remittance Program, which now generates over $30 billion annually for the Philippines, and his work in peace-building and environmental protection underscore his legacy as a true statesman," Senator Legarda asserted.
The Resolution aims to recognize and honor de Venecia Jr. 's influential role in national and international spheres, acknowledge his legislative achievements and impact, and serve as a tribute to his lifelong dedication to public service, diplomacy, and global cooperation.
