Overview
A spine-tingling suspense thriller that asks: How many bad men can one woman have in her life?
England, 1979. After a childhood trauma, Rebecca struggles to build healthy relationships. Her on-again-off-again partner is a married police officer trying to catch the Yorkshire Ripper, who has just claimed his tenth victim.
Then Rebecca meets Larry, a charming American with a troubled past.
And of course there's Mervyn, the creepy journalist she ended a brief relationship with, who will do anything to keep her in his life . . .
With three very different men craving her attention, and a serial killer on the loose, Rebecca soon finds herself in a twisted game of cat and mouse. Can any of these men be trusted? And could one of them in fact be a cold-blooded killer?
Overview taken from the official book press release.
Review
The best type of thriller in my opinion is a chilling one, one that has you literally glued to the pages and won't let you release until the end they have an almost hypnotic power to them when you are reading nothing else matters in the world you just have to finish the book.
The book follows Rebecca who is living the normal everyday sort of life that most of us are relating to but the only thing being is that this story is set with the time of the Yorkshire Ripper and at the point of the storyline he is still at large which definitely makes for scary time to be alive in that localised area. Having an affair with a married policeman may well be convenient for Rebecca but it's no way to live she deserves more than being a side piece, but meeting new men in this time is dangerous with the identity of the Yorkshire Ripper still isn't known it really could be anybody, so meeting a man will be tough but it's something Rebecca wants to do so when a mysterious American called Larry walks in her life she feels hopeful but like most men he has a past.
And then we have Mervyn a past flame that still holds a torch for Rebecca, creepy yes but a serial killer? Surely not. The arm of suspicion points in different ways in times of panic and everyone is beginning to look guilty, can Rebecca really trust the men in her life? After all she could well be cosying up to a serial killer.
I really liked the style of writing that James Woolfe used for this book, it has a relentless energy that flows throughout the book mixed with that intense tension that a thriller needs and with each chapter being relatively short it gives you that "just one more chapter" situation where you really can't put the book down. The book is infectious once you start it's definitely hard to stop, I loved the questions it raises and the twists and turns the book goes through. A great piece of writing.
